Finally found out a good way to do textures, along with a good textured image thanks to  goodman. Any comments and critiques are welcomed.

Original, layered. Has two layers of something I'd saved from the library here - a dark window from Nixter. One is reversed 90 degrees horizontal, both have slight (and different) color hues added.

Still not really where I want them to be.
 
My overlays are not as pronounced-yet-well-integrated as I would like them to be.
