Hi folks...
I am new...1st post...and hope I am in correct place for this question and also not pestering anyone. I just bought a JVC camcorder for a xmas gift and noticed that there are different suffixes on this model. I got a JVC GR D30U at Sears and it was advertised as a D30US. No where near experienced on this type of subject can anyone enlighten me on any differences or significance of the extra letter (hope it doesn't just mean United States...will show lack of intellegence for sure). Also, does the U have a snapshot mode? I have tried to research on the internet without much success. Thanks.... |

I don't know about this instance, but one reason for all those suffixes is that the manufacturer labels them for individual retailers. That's why they can make any price-matching offer with impunity -- you will never find Brand-X Model 12345-CC anywhere but Circuit City (hypothetical example).
Other suffixes may indeed refer to the intended market region, and one not appropriate for your's may indicate andthing from "gray-market" imports, counterfeits, or stolen goods to just a change in marketing plans by the manufacturer. |

found this link - it appears as though the U does have snapshot. |

Thanks for the reply...I read some of the specs and reviews on the site and finally broke down and opened the box (also discovered the snapshot button when I did). I have 2 more somewhat imperative questions if someone can help please, that I have not been able to satisfy as yet...
1) Will this particular unit perform is low light situations in a somewhat dark house? Is has a night alive feature and 0 LUX (have no idea what that means) when that function is employed but does not have any lights.
2) Is it possible to get a still picture printed/processed on home computer, printer, and a edit program? The unit does not have a memory card or stick.
Thanks,

0 LUX means it will work (how well?) in extremely low light. |

0 Lux operation essentially means the camcorder will operate with "no light", which means it must have an IR LED illuminator.

Most likely, the low light performance won't be great. Usually camcorders use a slow shutter speed (creating more or less jerky motion) and increase the sensitivity of the sensor (creating more grain in the video). Sony is an exception. A video light might help with night shooting if your camcorder accepts one.
If the camera doesn't have a memory card, it is probably recording the picture directly to the tape (what format does it use? Mini-DV?) In this case the only way to print the image would be to transfer the video to your computer, pause the movie when the picture is on screen and take a screen shot.
I have a Canon ZR70, and it's my experience that it really isn't worth printing the pictures that you can take with a camcorder. They may be ok for emailing, but your digital camera probably takes much better pictures.
Hope this helps somewhat.

Anything which will allow you to play/capture video of any kind usually allows for the export of any frame; a screen shot is the capture method of last resort (and probably DPC-illegal as well, although I'd argue in favor of a digital frame capture).
In snapshot mode, it may also save the pictures into permanent on-board memory, allowing only a certain number of photos before downloading them. |
