I'm looking around for a reliable online archive system for offsite backup. I already have a SmugMug account, I just noticed SmugVault. They apparently utilize Amazon's system. However, I noticed for "pro/power" users will pay for storage, and download fees if the data needs to be recovered. Did I read this wrong??? This seems to be the only site that charges for data transfer.

Amazon will bill you monthly for your SmugVault. Storage of JPG, GIF, and PNG files are included in your SmugMug subscription. Amazon only bills for other file types.
* Storage costs 22 cents per gigabyte per month. If you upload the contents of a 2 GB memory card, you'll be out 44 cents/month for storage.
* There is a $1/month recurring charge.
* Data transfer in is 30 cents per gigabyte. Data transfer out is 51 cents per gigabyte.
* Monthly addition to your home electrical bill: Zero.

Just found out about THIS site from a friend who is using them. He loves it. And they are only $50 a year. I haven't used it myself, but I plan on looking into it. And my friend seems very happy with them so far.

Thanks. I've looked at Mozy as well.
From Carbonite's website. They readily admit that back up will be slow for for a few dozen GB of data. Most of us here have much more than a few dozen GB of images. I guess it does not matter if it backs up overnight. |
