Very likely to happen, yup. I am likely to be there Weds and Thurs... Will know more tomorrow night.

Yeah rain's a problem. Let's assume for the sake of argument it is not raining; where and when to meet? If you give me a phone number I can have my people call you when we're en route to the airport, assuming you'll be up at that hour, and we can go/no go then...

Maybe some others will jump on the bandwagon...

Goody -- I'm trying to figure out how to get Isaac out of school ... there are many educational components to such a photographic excursion, and they might let it pass as an independent study field trip.

For SF, the newly-reopened Academy of Sciences in GG Park will probably be crowded but interesting. The bandshell in the concourse between it and the (new) DeYoung has been refurbished as well.

Hello Robert,

I hope the bay area has been good to you so far! I just saw this thread- I'm a super newbie to DPC, but would love to meet some of the other people on here. Won't be able to make it out to the city tomorrow, but I'll keep an eye on the thread to see what your other plans are.

If you still make it out to the city (my old stomping grounds) out and around the legion of honor, and the 49mile scenic route from there will have some great stuff to shoot (especially down to china beach). Golden Gate park would also be great!!! Academy of Sciences was so busy last weekend, they had to turn people away on saturday (while everyone who went was able to get in on Sunday)... so maybe better this weekend? And if you're around there, and the DeYoung, don't forget the japanese tea garden!

It was free on Saturday, regular admission fees on Sunday ... :-)

Also, the Arboretum is practically across the street. There's a new Muni bus route from downtown directly to the museums -- call 511 (or //www.511.org/ )for specifics if you're interested in getting there by public transit.

From the Palace of the Legion of Honor there's a trail out through the golf course which leads to less-typical views of the Golden Gate from the seaward side.

I'll shoot you a PM with a phone no for a go/no go. As far as a meet up place, kind of depends where you are interested in poklng around in SF (and how well you know the city).

Crissy Field, the Presidio and maybe across the GG Bridge to the GGNRA could be good if the clouds are threatening but not spitting too much. Waves could be crashing at Ocean Beach, so that's a possibility too. ETA -- The area around the Palace of Legion of Honor and trails around there that Paul mentioned could be great too. Could also just wander around Chinatown and North Beach, which offer plenty of places to duck in from the rain.

If city side stuff, we can meet somewhere down by the ballpark or off the Embarcadero, and then head to Market to grab anyone else who wants to BART or Muni in for a gtg -- easy access off 101/280 coming up from the airport, and should be plenty of street parking around there (though they've got a stage set up for something this weekend at Justin Herman, so the area right around the Ferry Building may be a bit jammed).

If the bridge and ocean side, we can meet down by Crissy Field, but that's a cross town drive from 101.

This would actually be a great spot to shoot even if its raining, with the added bonus (if its not) of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival going on at Speedway Meadow in the park as well. I've got plans already to go there Sunday with the family, so would probably bug out of that part of a Saturday gtg, but don't let that stop you if you want to try to get a group together to hit that.

San Francisco International Dragonboat Festival Oct. 4 -5, 2008 @Treasure Island
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival 8 Oct. 3 -5, 2008 @Golden Gate Park
Aki Matsuri(Fall Festival) Oct. 4-5 @ Japantown
SF LoveFest Parade/Festival Oct 4 @ City Hall
Castro Street Fair Oct 5 @ Market St and Castro
PIER 39's 30th Anniversary Celebration Oct 4 @ Pier 39

Lot's of events happening this weekend. Last weekend with the opening of the Academy of Sciences and other events around the city caused huge traffic jams.

I'm shooting the Dragonboat festival on Sat and the Aki Matsuri festival on Sunday.

What time you planning to get to the Dragonboat festival? Could be a good gtg/meetup spot for Saturday that avoids much of the in-city traffic, and easy to get to from points South and East.

AH!

I love this bay area thread!!! Not only am I hearing about great bay area events, and great places to shoot around my old stomping grounds in the city, but YOU'RE ALSO PENTAX USERS. The more posts I see, the more bummed I am that I'll be away on Saturday! Sounds like a million possibilities for a great time. If you guys do get around north beach/little italy, chinatown, make a stop at the marina and the palace of fine arts too!

Glad to hear you're coming to town, Robert.

Unfortunately, I'm jammed up this weekend and won't be
able to play.

It maybe that if the gang gets together on Saturday Morning,
and depending on where, I could drop by for a quick
Hello & Hug.

I'll keep an eye on the thread.

Bear in mind I'm a lot more interestedin landscapes/architecture than in the various cultural events, as fas as photography goes. To answer those who were asking, I'm very familiar`with San Francisco, have spent a lot of time there over the years. I'm looking at hopping over the bridge to Marin County, maybe... Down to Ocean Beach on the SF side, probably. Not sure, wide open, but I want to wander, it's been a while...

Possible meet-up area might be the parking lot near St. Francis YC in the Marina District...

Weather is obviously a potential issue. I have EstimatedEyes phone number, so we'll call that on the way to the airport.

Carmel on Wednesday is looking good.

The one between the yacht club and Fort Mason? I'm coming from the north/east, so that works. Ocean beach, Presidio, GGNRA, all that works great ... and skies are looking good last few days for landscapes.

For anyone else that is interested, and assuming the weather cooperates, I'm guessing the meetup would be around 9 a.m. or perhaps earlier, since Bear is dropping folks off at SFO by 730 ish.

Anyone that wants to join in, PM me with a contact number and I'll give you a call after Bear and I talk in the a.m., to let you know where we're meeting, or give you a # to call if you want to meet up later...

That sounds about right... I imagine I'll be down there by 8 AM actually, but I can troll over to the bridge and come back. Blue Toyota Camry hybrid is what I'll be driving...

It doesn't look as though it's going to rain anymore and things outside look very bright and clean from the little showers we had. I won't be able to make it today BUT if you go to Love Fest in the city, you'll probably see me there ;)

Well, Dennis and I hooked up early this AM on the Marin headlands. Sworling fog, clouds, patches of sunlight in the distance, some very nice, dramatic images awere made I believe. Then we trudled around SF for a while, visited the new ballpark, and he headed home, as did I in the opposite direction.

Next step is to organize Carmel/Big Sur for next Weds/Thurs, hoping the generale and some others can make it. And we'll try to organize a supper in Los Altos Hills next weekend, Sat or Sun, for those who can make it down.

Reservations now being accepted.

Sounds as if you and Dennis had a great time today. The clouds were terrific this morning, and I'll bet you took full advantage of them.

Now, weekend dinner.

If it happens that you choose Saturday, the 11th, and Gaia willing, plus the cricks not rising, I'll be there. Even help peel potatoes if needed.

Unfortunately, if it's Sunday, I just can't make it.

If it can be Wednesday evening and overnight through Thursday, Isaac and his sister MissHannahDoyle are both interested, if there's enough room.

You betcha... we got twin beds and a couch, bring a sleeping bag... I'll get the directions and PM them to you by tomorrow PM... We have a couple guest passes to the aquarium available as well, if that's your desire. Or do you want to truck down to Big Sur?

Robt, If you are out shooting Wed in the afternoon, I may be able to join you, work and family permitting. I'd drive home after sunset.

The kids are enthused about the aquarium, though I think to take best advantage of this as an educational opportunity, we should be shooting some architecture and landscapes. What about combining the aquarium with some urban shots in Carmel/Monterey, and then going down to Pt. Lobos for some land/seascape shots -- it's a lot closer than Big Sur. We need to get back to the East Bay at a reasonable hour on Thursday, which might entail leaving before sunset :-(

My guess is that we won't be able to get away until 5-ish on Wednesday, though we'll try for a little earlier; we are try to miss only one day of school.

I may resemble this line of thinking. I won't know until Tuesday though. Will keep you updated. :)

Fun time rambling around the Marin Headlands and joining Robert on his trip down memory lane around San Francisco ... Thanks for letting me tag along! Crazy weekend and no time to even chimp, much less post, some images, but should get a few up in the next day or two.

Sorry I'll miss the Carmel/Big Sur action ... have fun down there; I'm sure you'll come up with some more dramatic light to fill your frame.
