I have a point and shoot camera, and I love how easy and portable it is. But as I'm getting into this more seriously, I'm beginning to think that this camera isn't going to give me the crisp focus and precise exposure and great images that I see so many of you get with your lens cameras.

I don't think I've done so bad around here with my point and shoot (I even ribboned!), but I do think it's time to move on.

I'd say you've done outstanding. You are the proof that it's not the camera that makes great photos. Isn't it fun to regularly trounce people with way better equipment?

So what are you thinking of getting?

Thanks for the kind words. I've gotten moments with my P&S that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise -- I can bring it anywhere and it's easy to hide. Still, it has its limitations. It's a trade off, I guess.

I'm looking at the Olympus EVOLT E-510. Don't have a huge budget.

I was at exactly the same spot you are a few years ago ... I had the Olympus C-70 and was looking at the EVolt also ... I thought that since I loved my P&S so much that going with the same company would be a good thing ... when I got to the camera store the sales guy made me hold Canon's, Nikon's and Pentax cameras in addition to the Olympus ... I had QUICKLY changed my mind as to which company to go with. I didn't like the way the Olympus felt and after discussing expansion and lens options, I chose to go with Canon ... I would suggest you go to the store and do the same ... research the lens options and prices that are available before you jump in with both feet ...

The E-510/520 is an excellent choice, especially on a budget. It was the one I was considering, until I ran across a Rebel XT at a steal of a price. I really like the way the Olympus fits my hand and all the controls just seem to land under my fingers. The people I know who have this model (or similar) have raved about the image quality they get out of just the kit lenses.

I do agree with Pamela, however, that its a good idea to go handle some other models before locking yourself into a system.

By the way, until you posted this thread, I had not realized what you were shooting with. I am doubly impressed. I had been considering upgrading from the XT to an XSI in the near future, but looking at what you have done with a pocket cam reminds me that a better camera won't improve my photography. (I do like toys, however.)

If you don't have a huge budget, do not buy Olympus. Lenses are ridiculously expensive. I have bought my last Oly camera in the E3. I'm even thinking of selling it and moving to a brand with 5 letters in its name. ;]

Thank you all. I've moved this discussion here. New thread title will hopefully get some more views and feedback...
