Just as we were all bowled over with Sony's announcement of the new alpha 900. the Leica s2 is announced. I think I might sell my soul to the devil for one. its only $NZ 45.000. body only. Any others tempted out there. ? I guess the new sensor blows the competition out of the water

It seems to me that the "custom sized" sensor is a somewhat strange size. It's halfway between a medium format and FX... so which are they trying to compete with? Of course it processes faster than medium format.... there's less information being sent from the sensor, but it's also got a smaller sensor for the same price as a Hasselblad.

Yes, it's an odd breed. I think they are trying to incorporate the benefits of MF with the convenience (form factor) of 35mm. The body much more resembles a DSLR than an MF camera, but the sensor approaches MF form factor (but still with the wider 1.5:1 aspect ratio of 35mm.
It's a bold move, only time will tell if it's a successful one.
I did have to laugh though:

...it utilizes the classic 3:2 aspect ratio that corresponds to the human field of vision and is widely acclaimed as the âLeica Format.â

Leica format, my eye.

Are you taking classes there? I used to TA the digital photography class!

No, but two of my son Isaac's sisters (not quite my step-daughters) do take classes there, and I think one of them is taking a photography class. I will PM you a link to her Flickr gallery later.

Not to knock the Leica, this is actually general to a lot of the medium format cameras but especially stands out with this specific model. Why do the cameras costing $40k plus seem to be made from plastic with few options, almost like a $20 film camera with a really expensive sensor. When an XT for $500 seems like a refined camera compared. I could understand if they were completely new to the market but they could copy design ideas from other SLRs I would think.

What are all your opinions on that, should the cameras be more fancy for the price? Is simple in this case better?

Because people would giggle and point if you had the dial on your $40,000 camera set to P mode?

Hahaha very funny General. What I mean specifically for example is the back display has four buttons to navigate and make choices in a very similar format as my Nokia cell phone from 10 years ago. I see it has a shutter speed dial, however I wonder how you adjust ISO and aperture, note the lens has no ring. It is just curious. Maybe I'm just spoiled by all the goodies we have today. :)

Also I am guessing you do not review photos on a camera like that, since there appears to be no obvious way to go into a playback mode, what about timer or mirror lock up... live view...

Damned, that camera is 'ugly'...Leica is way too conservative, they are near the end!
