Hello eveyone. I am somewhat of a newbie and I am looking to upgrade from my 18-55mm lens. Im not looking to buy various lenses yet, as I am entering intermediate stages of photography. So I am looking to get a good lense that can be a great upgrade from the 18-55mm to use as an all around lens.

Hi Hugo,
Perhaps not the most polite question to ask but to help you further... what is your budget for this lens purchase?
I've also for a very long time considered to replace the 18-55 kit I have as well. If I had the money I'd spring for the 17-55 f2.8 IS EF-S lens. But because it's EF-S and I might consider upgrading soon I'm waiting out a bit. There's also the 24-105 F4 IS from Canon but it's not wide enough for an all around lens on a crop camera. There's also the 17-85IS which is cheaper than the 17-55 but IMHO the 17-85 isn't as good.
Sigma and Tamron make some nice lenses if you're on a budget.
I'd really recommend waiting out a bit till you find what kind of photography you like and will be shooting most , which will dictate which lens you'd like to purchase. By then you should also be aware of what's out there. I've had the 18-55 for far too long ;) |

| hey we have the same camera:) i still use my 18-55, and i hate it. i need an upgrade, but i keep getting telephotos and macros instead. ill get one eventually:) |

In my opinion...good price in your range for a good lens would be the the 17-70 from Sigma. Works as a great carry around lens. Then there is the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 for about $450 or so.
If you want to stay with Canon...spend a tad more and get the 17-55 f/2.8 or Canon 28-135 IS USM.

| So i got the Canon 28-135mm IS USM...i cant wait til it arrives. I went with this lens because of the IS and the silent motor. Hope I made the right choice. any thought? |

Hey good for you!!
My budget was a bit limited, so I went for the 28-105 lens that I got for less than $220 new. The one thing I dont have is the IS, but I dont regret it at all..esp. since whenever I want images to be sharp at their best, I use a stable surface as a tripod, and the zoomed in liveview to fine adjust the focus. There is still a lot I have to explore with it and may be then I will think about an upgrade:-)
The one you ordered (28-135mm) is extremely popular, and I would be interested in seeing your first shots with it if you can share some.

You have a 70-200 IS USM.. what more do you desire? ;-)

tehe, yeh i do enjoy my new lens. its more then i could every want really(besides a strobe, a new camera body, and a fish eye lens:) |

| i'd stick with the 18-55 for now i used it for alot of my pictures and am a bit sad i got rid :D, the 50mm (the cheap plastic one) is a good buy for portraigture etc though |
