		| | I was the waiting list at the local camera store and got the call this afternoon that it had arrived. Traffic was horrible this afternoon and got to the store at 5:58pm (they close at 6pm). Picked it up then had to a Boy Scout meeting, then a meeting at school, just got home at 10pm and have another hours worth of stuff to do before I can play with it. It's driving me nuts, the box is sitting on the desk by my computer taunting me. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning waiting for my parents to get up so I can unwrap my presents.
I'm debating whether to use it to shoot for the Pajama challenge tonight or to use my Rebel. I have a remote release and the capture software for the Rebel all ready to go which would make it easier to shoot for the challenge, but I will probably end up staying up until 3am using the 50D instead. :)

		| | Congrats - sure you'll love the new camera. For me, going from the 350D to a 30D was a massive step up, so you're definitely going to have fun with the 50D! |

		| | I'm jealous! Must be awfully frustrating to have it ~sitting in the box on your desk~ awww! Congrats... use it for a challenge right away and you'll be able to claim the "Top scoring entry w/ Canon 50D!" |

		| | I thought they weren't released until 06 October? Hopefully this means that mine will ship from BeachCamera sometime this week!

		| | Yeah, I was surprised to get the call because I was expecting the 2nd week of October as well.
I ended up going with my old camera for the challenge last night and it was a good thing I did because I had completely forgot that Lightroom doesn't recognize the RAW format for the 50D. I would have been up all night installing the Canon Raw software and dealing with all that. I discovered this issue this morning. I got up and took some photos and was going to post them then found out that LR would read them. I resolve it this evening and post some photos then.

I certainly hope that Adobe releases an update to CS3/RawConverter for the 50D, and quickly. The Canon software really sucks and it'll be a pain not being able to do all my editing in PSCS3 for a while.

Canon's software isn't that bad, but worst case it does spit out a tiff which you can dump into PS. That's all bridge is doing for you anyway.

IMO, Canon's software IS that bad. It's slow and cumbersome, in addition to the fact that it's one more piece of junk software I have to install and later remove.

I was one of the "early" adopters of the Canon 1D Mark III ... well ahead of the Lightroom / ACR update to support the camera. The solution that they offered was to convert the raw files to DNG and then import the DNG files into Lightroom.

There is a free DNG converter tool on their website. So that's what I recommend doing until 50D support is added.

Heres me stepping out of my element...

Look on the bright and or positive side, with the 50D and almost all of Canons digital cameras comes with a FREE converter/simple editor software...

And its GREAT for those that dont have PS or cant afford it and using alternative software...

I'd settle for some sample images - some of the camera and taken by the camera. It's practically obligatory!

 Congrats, btw! =)

Slow compared to what? Lightroom? You jest. Another thing in DPP's favor is that it recognizes the picture styles. I have yet to find the magic combination of knobs that can duplicate the 5D's native monochrome settings in any other app.

I am not waving the flag of DPP, but I can think of worse situations to be in than being 'forced' to use it while Adobe plays catch up yet again.

I use their Zoombrowser all the time for a quick scan of images and when I want to see one closer I'll bring it up with raw converter. Both are quick on my system. When I want to convert I'll use CS3.

But why do you have to install and later remove the software anyway?

I appreciate that some of you are fans of Canon's software. I am not. I find it cheap, slow, and cumbersome. Adobe is the industry standard, I shelled out a lot of money for it, it's my program of choice. The combination of Bridge, RawConverter, and Photoshop are my preference.

I've used Zoombrowser and DPP in the past - they were slow and I find them to be barely a step away from total trash. Again, personal preference, I suppose.
Ken, I'd have to install it in order to use it; and if forced to do so, I'd uninstall it the moment Adobe caught up to free up the memory it was wasting.

dwterry, thanks for the link! Much appreciated!

		| | I will try to get photos this evening, assuming I can convert the RAW files. :)
As for a DNG converter I would love to use it, I'm a big fan of DNG, but DNG is not acceptable for DPChallenge (I lost my one and only blue ribbon because of DNG).

I'm not. (a fan of DNG) To me, it's a means-to-an-end. The DNG converter lets you get images from an unsupported camera into Lightroom.

Do NOT delete the "real" raw files... you need those for the challenge validation.
