Hi... ok... my nikon D50 has a max shutter sync speed of 1/500... i know that is faster than most cameras... my friend has a D300 and his is only 1/250... do any other nikon cameras have a sync speed this fast?

Other question... I know that when you connect a Sync cord to your camera, the camera lets you go faster than the sync speed... My friend brought his D300 over because he is thinking of getting the same alienbees light setup I bought last week... now, if he goes faster than 1/250, there is a black bar across the pic... that's because he is shooting faster than the max sync speed, so he ends up taking a picture of his shutter curtain... I expected that to happen...

Now... here's my main question... How come with my D50 I can take the shutter right up to 1/4000 (and everything inbetween) and I don't get the black bar (i don't get the shutter in the shot)??? Why do I get away with that on my D50 but not on his D300?

I'm not complaining (good ol' D50 wins again...) I'm just curious why that is the case...

Thanks

D50, D70, and D70s all have electronic shutters, so they are able to sync at any speed.

As for the PC cord, it does not allow you to go faster than the max. sync speed. The limitation on sync speed is the mechanical shutter, not the way the flash communicates with the camera.

Interesting... another reason to hold on to my good ol' D50 when I pick up a D90 =)

most of the newer nikons have a fp mode which allows you to sync at any speed/ what it does is fires the flash at full during the shutter time

typically the flash is moderated/modulated and only flashes when both shutters are open

interesting... i'll have to look into that the next time he brings his D300 over

The fp mode only works with the Nikon SB800 or SB600 speedlights. If you're using the ABs, I'm not sure you can make it work that way.

you can trigger AB's from the sync port in High Speed mode

Ah. . . my D80 does not have a Sync port, though I just found the port on the D200.

Now, I wonder where I can get a sync cable. . . . . .

:)

i seem to remember there might be a silly trick to this .. somethnk like it'll work ONLY if you trigger through a sb800/sb600
hmm..
have to check ...
