We have an appointment with a daycare coming up to discuss Fall pictures. Do most photogs offer a commission at daycares? I'm pretty certain they do at large schools. |

Depends on your area of the country. Around here no none does it for T&I sports but in other places it's very common. I don't know about schools. I assume (based on the cost of the product) that they do at my local preschool (church owned) but not at the local public school. Smallest package at the preschool costs $35 (!) and at the public school you can get one 5x7 for $7. One wrestling team I'm shooting in November asked me how much I'll charge the league, per hour, on top of the packages i'll be selling! ( I told them I don't charge them a fee). Based on their question I guess their old photog charges something on top of what the parents buy. Perhaps that will get me more business for next year!
Best thing is to ask them 'Are you interested in offering your parents/students the lowest price possible or using Photo Day as a fund raiser for the school?' - their answer will tell you all you need to know. If they want a fee or percentage just adjust your prices accordingly.

I give them a small percentage as a thank you.
My reasoning is that they're providing me with a venue and a bunch of ready-made clients, and the least I can do is let them share in a piece of the profit as a good will gesture. I did a pre-school in our area last fall, and the parents were thrilled with the results and I ended up booking two weddings as a result of it. And they're having me back later this fall to do this year's shots.
I figure it just makes sense to give them something in return... otherwise, what real incentive do they have to alter a day of activities to accommodate pictures? Plus the staff members have been very helpful in keeping the kids organized, and they're in direct contact with the parents to help distribute information and the packages. It's definitely worth offering a little $$ for their help. And no, I don't jack up pricing to some exorbitant amount to accommodate it.

In some parts of the country they'll want 20% or even 40% back of the sales total. For that kind of revenue sharing you have to adjust your prices.
