I'm a GPS geek, so I'm excited about the GP-1 attachment that's supposed to start hitting stores in November sometime. This will allow convenient geotagging of images. I currently hook up my Garmin 60CSx to my D300 to do that, but it's a little cumbersome. This gadget will be nice and light and much more convenient.

Anyone have any idea on how much they'll cost? Anyone have experience with a similar, off-brand one? I've seen others, and they seem to be in the $250+ range, which is a bit pricey.

I've always wanted to see some pictures of this setup (GP-1 or any other attachment device) actually looks like "in use".

I love GPS, too, and am an avid geocacher... I'd like to consider geotagging some of my images "in real time" if I had the setup -- I just envision an unweidly mess of cables tangling me up trying to take photos... :P

Do you have any behind-the-scene/action shots of you or anyone else using this kind of setup?

Last I saw it listed it was $999!!!!! If so there are cheaper units out there.

Not sure if they are trustworthy

Good Lord. Either that's some sort of misprint, or Nikon has just gone insane. I can get a couple very, very nice GPS units for that price. Yeesh.

I'm a geocacher, too, so this is a natural thing for me to want :) And you're right, it can get to be a bit of a mess of cables the way I've been doing it. The cable attachment from Nikon has a pretty long cord, which I keep tied up and attached to another cord that goes into the GPS. I clip the bulky wiring onto my camera strap and let the 60CSx hang from it. It works out ok, but it gets a little heavy. I don't have a picture of all of that hooked up together. If I get ambitious, I'll snap one for you :)

Better late than never! :)

Sorry I didn't revisit this thread until just now. I took a shot of my setup with the GPS attached to my D300, and what it looks like on the screen when you view a geotagged image:

The first question other photographers ALWAYS ask me when I show an image is "Where is that?" (even if it is a "location independent" like a flower or something). I think someday we may just be actually using Lat/Long and Compass direction as image titles :-) Potentially, with more precision, 3 sets of coordinates, one for each tripod leg :-)))

I do like the idea of geotagging, though, all snarkiness aside

I've enjoyed doing it, particularly for vacation photos. I don't hook the GPS up for normal, everyday shooting, but I really like to tag my vacation shots. That way, I can easily see exactly where something was shot -- the heading information even lets me know which direction I was pointing!

I was browsing through a forum devoted to cruises earlier today, and someone had asked for the location of a restaurant I had visited (and photographed) earlier this year in Key West. I was able to look up that photograph and supply the GPS coordinates in the EXIF data.
