Hello folks,
I am on the verge of buying a new camera and have been drawn to the Canon 450D, but my money is burning a hole in my pocket, lol.
Would it be better to wait a week and get a 450D or is the 400D just a good a camera (which i can buy now). What do you think the pros and cons are between the two and what would you do.
Thanks |

To help, do a side by side comparison at dpreview. If none of the different features of the 450D really mean much to you then same the extra to spend on lenses.

I'm very, very happy with my 450D (XSi). I like the Live View, SD-card media (instead of CF...I already had lots of SD cards), 3.5 frames/sec burst, 1600 ISO noise performance (nice!), redesigned battery for longer battery life, Digic III processor, 3" LCD, the list goes on and on. I don't see why you'd not consider the 450D over the 400 at this point...the price has already dropped significantly. Unless you're going to wait another month and get a 40D for half price, once the 50D is on the shelves.

The 40D looks nice and even though its only a month away from a potential price drop, i dont think i can wait that long. I could always sell the 450D (which i think i will be holding out for after reading the comparisons) should i decide to go down that route at a later date.
I hate this having to pick out a camera, i can guarentee as soon as i buy the model i want, i will see something i like that i should have chosen. I have even considered the Nikons lol |

I think that's where you need to figure out what features are important to you and go from there. Do the current cameras out there cover all the features you want? Is 3.5 fps enough?

lol. Not by half. Sounds good on the exterior, until you're banging away on the shutter at a football match and you realize you've managed to perfectly bracket either side of the action on your son's first goal. :-/

Exactly my point. What you intend to shoot will dictate what features you rate the highest. Use that list to compare with each camera being considered and strike off the list those that don't match what you need.

3.5 fps, at this point i dont think it matters too much as i am not that interested in fast paced sporting events but more like a walk in the country, the beach, looking for intereting subjects to shoot and post process.
I do like the 12 megapixel of the 450 as it gives you a little more scope for cropping and keeping quality and the live view sounds interesting. |

Have you considered getting a used 30d, I've been extremely impressed with mine, not sure exactly what you are going for, but for less than $600 it may be worth looking into.

Axle - I have had the 450D now for just over a week and I find the camera to be a great performer. The wife has the 400D and when all is said and done they BOTH produce good images, you will be very happy with either.

Thanks MAK, nice to see you again btw.
I am sure i would be happy with both, but there a few features of the 450 that i am drawn too. If i could get a nice 400 with a couple of good lenses then i would be happy....or would i? lol. This is aweful.
Has anyone had any experience of getting a camera from Hong Kong or the states? It seems to be a little cheaper overseas... |

I was in the same situation 3 weeks ago and I went with the 400D. The extra 2.5 megapixels of the 450D won't make a difference. LiveView...I'm not sure how often will you use it but that depends on what you shoot, and you have to go through a menu "labyrinth" to get to it. The only thing(s) improved that would worth buying it for is the digic3 processor, but believe me you couldn't tell the difference; and the kit lens that comes with the 450D, the EF-S 18-55mm IS.
Hope it helps!

I saw the 1ds Mark II in your profile, I wasn't sure if you had already had that, very good choice, very fun camera to shoot with.

...and another former Canon S3 IS user leaves the fixed lens behind! Honestly, I still use my S3 occasionally...it's great to show my young son how to hold and operate a camera. It makes decent video clips, too. The upgrade seems to have cost me some Photo Mojo, though. :-/
