I am interested in doing some photography using variable speed strobe lights. Does anyone have any information on what type of strobe lights to buy for digital photography, where to get them, and how much to spend. Also any tips on exposure times and strobe speed is greatly appreciated. |

You can use just about any strobe intended for DJ use, they are xenon strobes same as your on-camera flash unit. Power will be determined by what you want to photograph, and whether you will want to illuminate directly or bounce. Google it as "DJ strobe light" (without the quotes).
You can spend from $14 to $500 or more for these types of strobes, I don't think you really need to spend any more than about $50 to get reasonable power and a relatively wide variable rate, say from 1-20 flashes per second.
If you are interested in triggered stop-action photography, here's a link to begin with...

Note that high-speed triggered-strobe photography is very addictive, but requres a lot of ingenuity as there are few products available, at least at reasonable prices, so everything is build-it-yourself.
