Well, I know there are several benefits and such to upgrading and whatn't. However the bigger picture is what do you, the website members think based off my portfolio/challenge entries here.
I ask this, because even though I know I would love to have a better camera... have I really outgrown the 20D or do I still have more learning to do before upgrading?
Also, truth be told, there is absolutely no way I can even fathom trying to get an extra battery for the 20D let alone upgrading the body. So why do I ask this... its simply about wanting to know if, have I progressed enough to fulfill a need or am I just wanting because its shiny. Also, I ask, because I look at most of my work being crap with only a handful of decent images. Getting someone elses unbiased opinion is nice to hear, good bad or ugly. Is it worthwhile for me to try and make something of it, or leave it as a hobby.

Andrew, the 20D is still an awesome camera, imho its not as noisy as my 1DMKIIn and I still pick it up over the 1D for lots of shots. Have you outgrown it? no! do you want a shiny new camera? yes! tbh you are the only person who can answer your Q, if you have the spare cash for an upgrade then do it (and keep the 20D as backup) but, from experience a new cam won't make you a better fotog but you might look cooler taking the same shot ;)
In the good old days of overtime I purchased half of Canon and tbh am thinking of downsizing a little as I have so many choices I often mess up lol.

| You didn't mention what you'd like to upgrade to, but with all the new bodies coming out, the poor 40D is dropping rapidly. After the 50D comes out in mid October, I bet you could pick one up for close to $800. |

If I upgrade it will be to a full frame canon with lots more mp. I have been Eyeballing the 5D and 1d/s Marks....
But yeah... this is pretty much a glorified hobby for me anyway. I do not foresee anytime soon someone wanting my style, least not enough people to support a full time business.... not even part time, but anyway...

Why?
A camera is a tool. If the tool is getting between you and your vision then you need a differentt (newer, better, etc) tool. A new body may give you more enthusiasm, get you out to take more pictures, etc, but it won't give you any new outlook on the world.
IMO the 20D was cool and a big deal back in it's heyday, but it's soooo out dated now it's not funny. The 40D is soooo much better in speed overall(ariting, startup, focus, FPS), focus, has live view, self cleaning sensor, better high ISO, HTP and lots more. The 50D has some things added to it, but like the 20 to 30 upgrade it's not a lot unless you thirst for more MP or really need that extra stop of light at the high end of things.
Will the IQ be all that different? Maybe...the 40D (and 50 and new 5D2) are all 14 bit RAW so you get a lot more DR than the 20 will give you. Several stops more.
What can you sell the 20D for? I'm selling a 30D next month I think (a friend is getting a 5D2 and I can get his lightly used 40D for a good price) for $500. But it's not a big upgrade over the 20D - it's faster to start/write, etc and the LCD is a lot bigger, but that's about it (compared to the 40's new focusing system and custom menus, etc it's not much anyway).
