k so the biggest question would be since the 50d is soon to be released, which would be a better trade. trade my 20d body for a 50d or markII and still use the 70-300 ive got lying around. or stick with the 20d and go for a nice bit o glass such as the 70-200 2.8 or 300 f/4. the pros and cons would be i would gain a huge buffer with the new body which i lack with the 20d when shooting raw. second would be a better iso range and iq with either the two newer bodies. the cons would be i would be stuck looking like a nub with a 70-300 smacked on a mark II or a 50d. i dont think i need the fps as much but it wouldnt hurt. second would be mark II vs newer 50d(which has a pretty hefty gat shutter as well.) well all in all give me your best idea for what i should do. thanxs

The 50D will command a premium for the first little while. So if you can delay getting it, you can save some money. Meanwhile, the price of a good lens hardly ever changes, so any time is a good time to buy. And it will out last any of your bodies anyway. So I agree with violinist123, go for the glass. :)

I'm looking also for the answer. The 50D looks so nice. (Mark II is just too much weight for me for walking around). Don't think the raw buffer is good enough for really fast shots (sometimes JPG isn't too bad). Main reasons for me would be a larger display (so small on the 20D) and live view. Don't know if the dust problem is really solved, but that would be nice. Don't know if I like the large resolution (lots of disk space, not really needed for just web or A4 format photos). I agree with violinist123: glass is far more important, but some body upgrade sometimes isn't too bad.

| ya I just hate the seven raw buffer especially when your shooting a sequence of some sport(bodyboarding) and the buffer runs out just before the rider hits a huge air or something. But I tried my buddies d200 and not to dis it or anything but the iso sucks!! I loved it entireLy until it got dark. But I may salvage like 100 or 200 bucks and just get a 30d for now as a cheap solition to my buffer issue. |

I will say this... the 40D and (soon to be) 50D are all quite jump up from the 20D. I Started with a 20D; in fact I wore the Shutter Release (just the button) out on that one and had it repaired (12 dollar part, 160 in labor...ouch). I moved to the 40D with the 20D as my second body. Keep in mind I loved my 20D when that was all there was, but I have to admit I almost hate shooting the the 20D now. It is a lot of work compared to the 40D.
I am spoiled with the Large LCD that I can read, LiveView which I use more than I thought I would. I use picture styles quite a bit as well. I use spot metering less than I thought but it is there.
An upgraded body will make picture taking easier and more pleasurable, but good glass will make post processing easier and a lot less time spent in the digital darkroom. It's pretty much a toss up as to the direction to go. I actually got my better glass when the 20D was my only body, then I upgraded to the 40D.
Now, if your 20D is as old as mine is (I put ~80K shutter clicks through it before repair) is it near a major overhaul? If you go get some good glass $$$ what is your back up plan if something happens to the body? Will you be bodyless for a while? It is never fun trying to scrape up funds for repair or new body.
