Ok, folks, hhheeeeeeeerrrreeee we go! Cruise Director Jeffrey reporting for duty.
We need drivers!
Meet at 10 am at the Library of Congress, Jefferson Building. It's right across the Street from the Supreme Court and the Capitol. Here are directions.
We can take pictures outside and in the main hall. From there, we can wander over to the Supreme Court, which is closed, but again we can shoot outside. And then do the same at the Capitol. Note that tripods aren't allowed on the Capitol grounds without a permit.
At that point, we'll see how we're doing on time. If people are interested, we can various monuments and memorials. When we're ready for lunch, we'll go to China Town, where there are ample street photography opportunities and great food.
After lunch, we'll saddle up and head to the U.S. National Arboretum for some nature photography.
Again, we'll regroup mid-afternoon and decide when to leave. Last year, many people seemed to appreciate the chance to relax for an hour or so before dinner while I headed home to cook. You're welcome to do or come home with me. I'll give out directions on Saturday.
After dinner, we'll head out to shoot whatever the people who come along want to photograph. All of the monuments and memorials are beautiful at night. I'm guessing we'll leave my house around 8 and shoot until people fall over. :)
Nikolai, it'll be very easy to drop you at Union Station on our way to my house from the Arboretum - it's right on the way.
Please confirm in a post below that you're coming and for what part - this'll help me plan food and ensure we have enough drivers.
Nikolai, I have you, obviously.
Scooter97 is coming with banmorn.
MaryO and marcbenton, I also know you're coming all day.
Budya's joining us for the night shoot.
Others?

Sorry Jeffrey, I thought Tom and I could make it this time. Unfortunately I'm going to have to pull out. However, sometime in the next month or two (definitely before winter sets in) we'll be down. When that happens I'll contact you, of course.
Have a great time, one and all. You'll be in my thoughts. Enjoy, and I'll be wishing you perfect photography weather.

News flash: for the night shoot, we'll go to the Pentagon 9/11 memorial that opens today. From the pics I've seen, it should be a moving, visually stunning memorial.
Not too often that you get a chance to photograph a national memorial 2 days after it opens. I expect it'll be a somber shoot, but still very good.

Saturday's forecast is brightening some so maybe we can stay dry after all.
Jeff - my husband has promised to bring my car back Friday night so I can drive Saturday if we need me to (pardon my awkward grammar). If there are fewer than 8 people we should probably just go with one van, though, to make parking and coordination easier. |

Thanks, Mary. I agree we should minimize the # of cars.
Everyone: I've updated the first post in the thread to show confirmed and unconfirmed.
If you're in the unconfirmed category, please post your intentions.
Thanks!

I'm in for the capital and arboritum and then will need to cut out before dinner. My Mom would like to come if there is carpool room for two.
Looking forward meeting everyone.

Anybody else for tomorrow? I've sent PMs to all of the "unconfirmed" folks, but if you happen to see this and post here, that's fine, too.
See you all at 10 at the Library of Congress' Jefferson Building!

A couple things:
- weather now says only a 30% chance of rain. Which doesn't mean it won't target us, but it's much better than earlier forecasts.
- anyone coming in from VA via Metro should be aware that the Yellow Line bridge over the Potomac will be closed, so you need to take or transfer to a Blue or Orange Line train. Ditto for getting to the Pentagon from DC. |

Looks like maybe we can get by with one car? Whatcha' think? I'm trying to decide whether to Metro or drive in the morning. |

I'm counting 8, although Scott (Scooter97) will have his van, too, which can hold 4, he said.
But I may bug out early to come home and get ready, so it'd probably be better for you to have your van, Mary.
Speaking of dinner, folks, for a variety of reasons, I haven't managed to buy BBQ stuff, so we may be ordering takeout instead.
Thanks.

Thank you Jeffrey for organizing this GTG. Always good to meet new DPCer and catch up with an old one.
While I'm here let me shamelessly promote my recent photos from 9/11/08. NYC Downtown/Light Towers/Waterfalls

Ditto on the gratitude for Jeffrey for going out of his way to coordinate this. It was great meeting everyone, we had an excellent time.
I'm still working on the shots from the shots from the Arboretum but have the rest on my SmugMug account:
