Can someone let me know what a good tripod would be. I'm thinking about the $100 range and below. What is the best I can get for around 100 bucks?

I would take a look at SLIK tripods if you are looking under $100. I have one and LOVE it. The biggest thing for under $100 is that you probably will not get something light. Also probably not a ball head. If you can live with not having those two things I assure you the SLIK is in my opinion the best. You can get one quick at most local photography shops. Good Luck and hope you love yours whatever you get cause really no tripod is worth it if you won't take it with you.

Well I have a tripod now that I have had for some time but I bought it for like 20 bucks. It's just getting to the point where I am about to toss it like a golf club.

I don't really know that much about tripods so I thought I would ask.
By the way everytime I see your name Mike_Adams I keep thinking about my brother in law.
That is his name hahaha

I have a Manfrotto 785b. It's small and light, easy to carry and sells for between $60-80. I use it with a Rebel XT, which is about the same size and weight as your D40x. I wouldn't put anything heavier on it, however.

Really it is like when someone around here asks which camera to buy, and we tell them to go out and hold them in there hands. Same thing for tripods...head down to the local shop that has a good selection and pick them bad boys up.

You know what a 20-30 dollar tripod feels like, now go pick up a real one. You will say to yourself OMG. I know, I went through this adventure this past weekend. I did not get out as lucky as you will as you set a budget limit. I did see a lot of nice pods in the 100-130 range, they just were not going to support the weight I was going to throw at mine. There was some nice looking Sliks (9000 I believe that is a 40 dollar one) but the bogen/manfrottos, gitzos and induros sure are sweet. Promaster had some in your range that felt pretty good as well.

I ended up with an Induro system... but well beyond what you have budgeted.

Never toss the old one. Use it to hold other things for shooting. ie props, reflectors, flashes etc.

Well I may raise my limit to 150 but that has to be my max. I will head down to a local shop and see what they have. Thanks guys.
