I edited these shots:
Which one is better
Straps on or straps off?

[original]

Edited

I took out the straps because I felt they distracted and didnt add to the shot.
Perhaps I am being too picky lol

What is your take?

I like the touch of color they add, but I'd say it's up to your subject - ask her which she prefers.

I think I can see a little bit of strap left in the shadow of the face

I agree with deb here, up to the subject.

Thanks.
Yeah I am extending that option to her. This was part of a workshop that we paid for as photographers to practice with some models.
I am just trying to learn the whole side of dealing with people in this field. She asked to see the original (she was very nice about it) And I have showed it to her. I just liked it without the straps because my eyes are drawn to them. For some odd reason I thought she might have liked it too lol. Rookie mistake on my part :P

I like it better without the straps. But, as already mentioned, she should have the choice. Hopefully she will validate your vision and go with the straps off.

Not a rookie mistake - good idea to try it both ways and leave it up to the model or whoever "wants" the picture if that's the case. If it's just for you, do it the way you like it!

Yeah she was a cool gal. She just told me that she wanted to see the difference. I figured she wanted to see the photographers point of view and understand why did I pick one over the other. She basically said pick the best one I thought was right.

What a cool gal :)

Classic answer. "It Depends". ...on what the picture is intended to be used for and what the customer likes. Generally without is more natural.

ADDED: Ask her if she wants to portray/convey an alluring image/conception or a more conservative "image". Also where it is intend to be displayed on the church wall or on a website, on a business newsletter, or some lighter publications.

Less distracting with the strap off. But then there's the background, and the shadow being cast by flash, and all the piercings, and the makeup, and the hair going in different directions . . .

Uh that black crap all over her eyes is way more distracting than the straps will ever be.

to compare like for like you really need to do the same processing on both shots - I prefer the processing on the shot without straps - but as it is a brighter punchier shot the straps might actually add to it with the colour (loosely) picking up on her lipstick.

Looks better w/o the straps, and i I am correct in understanding that a) it's your image and b) you had to pay to take it in the first place, I don't understand where the model's opinion comes in to play.
