Ahhh, I got lucky in that I was randomly acknowledged. I think that my received and given ratio is due to the fact that I have seen many more photos that I was compelled to comment on (sometimes I just can't think of anything to say) and my photos haven't inspired as many comments.

The original point was to get the whiners (meant in the most affectionate way possible :-o ) to start contributing to the comments.

But here's a little speculative food for thought: I'd be willing to bet that the most vocal of those asking for comments on a regular basis are probably mostly the people doing the majority of the commenting. So their "whining", as you put it Pedro, is probably in response to making the effort to comment extensively, then not receiving a similar effort in return. So, I suspect, provoking the "whiners" to make more comments will probably have little effect, since they are probably carrying the load as it is. In fact, this may spur them on to be more vocal, since you've validated their efforts (edit: at commenting, not whining).

But that's just speculation...

Oh, and I didn't realize the call for posting your commenting stats had become an edict. I figured if anyone wants to know, they can look at my profile. And, statistically, in relationship to this thread, it doesn't mean anything. But since it seems to be a sore point....

Does that make everyone feel better? ;-)

Bwahaha! Anyway, I'm working on it! The hardest thing for me is that I'm a beginner. I was really "in" to photography as a high school senior and knew a lot about it then, granted that was film photo. Since then, I've managed to forget a LOT about the whole process, and I'm still new to digital photography. A lot of times I want to comment because I know what would look better to me, but I'm unsure of myself because I don't know how to express my suggestions in a photographically intelligent manner.

Sometimes I'm hesitant about rating or commenting on entries that I feel I may not be appreciating to their full extent... especially those with tricky lighting, focus, or obvious techniques that are beyond me. I just don't know what to say as I don't know how some of those things are done and cannot offer any help or suggestions on those grounds. There are only so many "Wow, spectacular, Nice job" comments I can leave without feeling like a complete idiot! While I liked getting nice comments on this challenge, my first, I know that to seasoned, talented photographers, such comments might seem like a waste of time or text space. Anyway, so I'm working on it, and my apologies to anyone I've skipped over in my ignorance, misinterpreted, or failed to acknowledge. Let's hope that in time, I'll be able to comment intelligently and helpfully, as well as still be "wow"ed by your work. :)

To Pedro - I appreciate the recognition. Unfortunately I've been really busy of late doing portraits and stuff. I haven't submitted in a few weeks and what I have submitted hasn't done very well either. I'm hoping after the holidays I'll be able to concentrate on DPC some more. I better, I just re-upped my membership for another year!

Commenting has helped me deal with a lot of my shortcomings as a photographer. And if anyone cares to notice, you won't find a whole lot of "good shot" comments amongst mine. Generally I try to give more details than that. I'm sure at least some of them were helpful to some, and some were probably way off base.

At any rate, thanks for noticing Pedro...

I don't bother with basic "good shot" comments much either - other than congratulating friends if i see them win a ribbon!!!!

932 made
107 received

I'm just trying to keep it within 9-10 made to each 1 received. So the more I get,the more you will get ;P.

A lot of times I will go to the person that commented on my challenge entry within the voting stage and comment on most if not all of their pictures as a thank you.

Time since last challenge entry: 4 months, until this week.
Reason: Too many 1s, 2s, and 3s with nearly no one saying why.

In other words: Scott's theory has at least one data point to support it.

By the way, that works out to:

Comments given vs votes given: 52%
Comments received vs votes received: 5.5%

I have given up on trying to suggest people should comment more. Until the last couple challenges I voted on, my comments give to votes given ratio was well over 90%. The last 2-3 challenges I voted in I was completely unmotivated to comment extensively because of not receiving comments. That's also why I stopped even trying to vote 100%, and it's why I haven't voted on a single round since July, because I am also not motivated to vote/comment on rounds I haven't entered.

If you were wondering how it happens that comments given and received don't seem to achieve anything like parity, there's one reason right there.

If I get a single comment approaching the quality of a critique (even and especially an 'unprofessional' one), I'm in heaven. When I get forty comments showing little examination and involvement, I feel somewhat coerced to courtesy.

The statistics do not reflect this.
