*passing box of Kleenex* Do what is right for you. If that includes taking time off from the site or entering challenges for awhile, then do it. Lots of people have been on this site for years and have entered relatively few challenges. (hugs) |

Everyone understands what you are saying, but if you think B&H is the only type of catalog you're mistaken
//www.skymall.com
//www.travelsmith.com
//www.jcrew.com
While they do show some products with the background dropped out, they also show their products in context. If you look at their printed catalogs you will see the same thing.
Not every product catalog just shows the product with nothing else or from a straight on POV.
I believe in sticking to the challnge theme, but "catalog shot" can be way more than what you are saying. |

I agree with your point. Earlier I did mention an example of LL Bean.
IMO, after looking at the entries in this challenge, there are entries that are way more of an ad than a catalog shot (even an embellished one such as those you've listed).
ETA - Please don't overlook that I used the B&H example in response to show how their "catalog" photo's look (again, in response to liberty's post).

??? Magazines and Catalogs are two entirely different things.
A magazine ads are promoting a product, enhancing a product in the eyes of the consumer...selling it by making it look good and enticing the consumer to say "I want that".
Now, once you've decided you want to buy that item you go somewhere to buy it. Perhaps a store, or maybe to a "catalog" (online or printed).
Example: Canon camera in magazine ad with brilliant photo example subliminally tells the consumer that this camera will help them take great photos. Now, go to B&H (or open your B&H hardcopy catalog) and see what the "catalog" looks like to place an order.
Some catalogs are better than others. For example LL Bean may have some interactive photos in an outdoor setting in which the product is displayed, etc...
Bottom line? Most catalogs are there for you to place an order after you've been sold on an item via mass advertising (magazine, billboards, tv, etc...). |
they both advertise the product. either way they are both tryng to sell you that product.
... So you are saying (example) B&H is going to do nothing to make that product more appealing, or do they just throw it out there and say here, it may look shabby, but buy it anyway? ... |
Here's an advertisement -->
Here's the above advertised item in a B&H catalog -->
I wish I had a Popular Photography magazine and a scanner available...I'm sure many of you have seen the ads for Canon/Nikon/Sony, etc...showing the camera in use with the camera and supporting props. Those advertisement photos are quite different than a catalog photo that shows a product only.
Sorry for the long post...I wanted to show that photos of products for magazines are different than catalogs (in response to liberty('s) post).
Back to your regularly scheduled scores! :-) |
I'll probably regret posting this but here goes.
They both Advertise the Product. Back to what I said the very first time, "I think almost all products in mags are ads." and yes the photos are diferent, but used in selling, just the same. And as said by challenge description, "take a photo of a product that MIGHT appear in a catalog" I didn't read anywhere that it said make your picture look like a catalog picture, or a magazine ad.

Semantic arguments like this one I find very amusing - unlike the scores in this challenge. The fact is that no one can offer definitive proof of what is a quintessential "ad shot" over a "product shot" - the concepts can be wildly different and yet identical. I'm sure for everyone who points out "This is an Ad shot", someone could just as easily find a catalog(s) with like images and vice-versa... and voting down a product shot because you think it "could" be an ad shot is splitting the tiniest of hairs.

Just did a quick looksee through the thumbs. I worked in advertising for 7 yrs. To my jaded advertising-whore eye, 95% of the shots are ads, and 5% catalogue shots.
The very rough guidelines we were taught at college way back in the early 90s, during on of the two semsters in which we took Photography as part of the curriculum, was that a catalogue shot was simply a clean shot of product, nothing more. The assumption was that if people are already going through a catalogue, they are already interested in that catalogue's offerings, so no need to do a fancy set to help sell it. For example, anyone who gets the Greenhawk catalogue or flyers doesn't need to see a picture of a saddle on a horse; just a picture of a saddle will suffice.
An ad shows the product and the real and/or perceived benefits of owning/using that product, hence the use of models, sets, copy etc. To use the horseworld as an example again - and I was thinking this BEFORE I went through the shots, I swear to gawd! - a product like a flymask doesn't really look like anything much just sitting there on a set, just a pile of mesh, some fleece, and a couple strips of velcro. But put it on a horse's head, and you can see what the product is and how it works, along with features like ear protection, too.
Having said that, I'm still going to vote on the merits of the photo first, then worry about whether it's a product shot or not. |

Here is the way I see it
The challenge is Product Shot. Not Ad Shot, and not Catalog shot. The description is "Take a photograph of a product that might appear in a catalog.". If the description was worded a little different, like "Take a photograph of a produce as it would appear in a catalog.", then the pictures would have to look like catalog shots. But the way it is worded opens the challenge up to ad shots, or just product shots in general.
So, I dont think anyone should be voting anything lower just because it falls under the classification of "Ad Shot" or "Catalog Shot". Keep in mind that the theme is "Product Shot" |

Totally agree. I asked myself "Is this a nice shot of the product? Does it make the viewer want to buy what they're offering?" And I also remembered those duty-free catalogues in airplanes, where you select the product for purchase but the pictures are very much "ad-like." |

I didnt have time to shoot for this. My take on this challenge is this............a product shot to ME is something that I would see on the box of the product itself. I have seen alot of ad shots in this challenge. I know its not cut and dry and I didnt vote down for what I see as ad shots rather then product shots. Although I did vote a bit higher on ones I thought were actual product shots.
Stats: You have rated 119 of 119 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 13 images (11%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.5210.
I'll try to finish commenting later this week.

I'm not gonna come back to this thread after tonight because I really can't stand to hear any more bickering over the whole ad/product thing. Is it really that bloomin' important?
Anyways, personally I feel that whatever each shot can be categorised as (purely product or clearly ad) they're all fantastic. If I could vote, I honestly don't think I would've given anyone under a 6. I haven't mentally scored anyone down over the type of shot either. Everyone has done superbly well and I'd say you should all be pretty pleased with yourselves. I hope you're all able to enjoy the spirit of the competition and forget about the product and ad differences eventually.
I'm almost done my comments round by the way :)
