Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 ED

After much research and advice on this forum, I finally ordered my first SLR:

Canon Rebel XSi

Instead of the kit lens, I opted for the 28-105mm lens:

Canon 28-105mm general purpose lens

Here it comes.. my new friend:-)

And so begins the journey... I hope you realize that it won't end there. Next thing you'll be buying another lens, a flash, a tripod, backdrops, lighting, stands, umbrellas, and most of all ... yet another new camera when you finally get tired of this one.

But have fun along the way, you're in for quite a ride. (especially if you hang around with this crowd and participate in challenges!)

Yes I do plan to hang around on forums and in the challenges too. My first two challenges with a decent non-DSLR have been a disaster (of course primarily due to my lack of skills:-) :

First : ~4.5
Second: ~4.0 (still in voting)

hahaha, yea, i was so nervous when I bought a D50 last December used for $330... that was sooo much money for me to be spending on camera equipment... hahaha... thousands of dollars later... here I am =)

next comes a tripod and a remote,
then comes a long zoom lens,
then several prime lenses,
then a macro lens,
then a dedicated flash,
then an off camera flash cord,
then a second dedicated flash,
then a fisheye lens
then some studio lighting,
...

this is where I stand now... man oh man... it never ends =)

At least with all these challenges, you will always have a chance to use your equipment =)

now, I am a Nikon use myself... but i believe that the XSi also has an approximate 1.5x sensor factor... so you may find that you NEED that 18mm focal length... the 18-55mm kit lens is the same as the 28-80mm kit lens for Film SLR cameras... just keep that in mind... the 28-105mm lens you ordered is like a 42-150mm focal length on a Film SLR

Good point about the focal length, but I think he'll find the lens to be a great walk-about. The one that lives on my camera (with a crop sensor) most of the time is the 24-105 and I find it is wide enough in most instances. That said, the 10-22 is on my camera when the 24-105 isn't, and it's a whole lot of fun!

First thing to do after charging up the battery is to update the firmware.

Thanks Guys! You definitely charged me up.

For now, I exhausted a sizeable portion of my savings, so I will hold on to the only lens I ordered. With time, though, I will keep looking for used lenses if at all.
