Here's the deal:

It's the second time that I've got this feeling, that when using live view with my tripod (Manfrotto 055 ProB with 808RC2) I don't have the sharpness that I've used to.

In the two sittuations that I've notice this I was using the tripod, a sb800 in a light stand with a translucent humbrella, 1/30 sec of shutter speed.

Does this make any sense, or is just my imagination?

I haven't done a serious test, but in the last two weddings that I've used this like I described I ended up with a bit blurred images.

I'm not sure, but I may have heard that live view and autofocus don't work together. Can't swear to it...

Are you using the live-view focusing? Perhaps this is not so accurate as the standard focusing method. Another possibility is that if you are using the mirror flip focussing, then maybe the double-mirror flip adds more shaking than the normal single mirror flip. Anyway, I don't really know, just guessing at some possibilities.

When using Live-view and IS on my 1D, I have to manual focus, but the sharpness I see on the LCD equals that of the final shot. I will always stand corrected on Liveview as I thought it was initially a bit gimmicky, but quickly reassessed that opinion once I had used it.

with the D300 autofocus should work using live view.

As far as I know what happens is that for focusing the camera needs to flip the mirror, so for each shot the mirror bounces two times. So if I was gessing I would say that this extra "shaking" due to one more mirror flapping for each shuter pressed. But ypu could be right and this autofocus could be not so acurate. And as I'm using appertures from 1.4 to 2.8 it could be an issue.
