The latest compact camera I used was Casio Exilim EX-M2 (this one here) and I was very happy with it. I lost it.
Last year I had to buy for a friend a compact camera and went with Canon PowerShot A-somenumber. I must say I wasn't very happy with the quality of the image.
Now I need to buy again a compact point and shoot small little box that fits in the pocket. I spent two days looking for different types and all look the same with about the same characteristics. But, I never had the chance to take pictures. So, I'd ask if anyone can point a name or two that I should look for, or avoid.
Thanks! |

Nikon Coolpix L18. Excellent photo quality.

| I actually have a Canon Powershot A560 and I think the image quality is very good. I bought one for my sister as well and she loves hers. I have been very happy with it. |

Try one of the new Fuji Z series at a store.
In the slightly older Fuji A series, I have had an A610, and a couple of A820's. The A820's have the Fuji sensor that gives great color right from the camera, and excellent macro ability as well. The menus are very easy to use too. Even my 75 yr old aunt gets good images with the one that I gave to her a couple of months ago. They have Fuji cameras at Wal M if you want to look at one hands on.
I broke the A820 that I was using for a tote around, and just ordered a replacement a couple of days ago.

The Canon A95 is probably long out of production, but it's an awesome camera and I still use it. My favourite feature is the Swivel Screen, which makes it easy to perfectly frame scenes from all sorts of odd perspectives. I don't see many cameras with swivel screens any more, hopefully it's not a thing of the past. I'd suggest whatever the successor to the A95 is, as long as it has a Swivel Screen.

for p/s cameras...I'd buy the bulkier Sony cameras. Image quality is superb with the Carl Zeiss lens. Plus the side benefit of being able to throw on a hoya R72 and kick in the nightvision for great infrared shots.
Oh yeah.... it will swivel.

definately fujifilm! their f-series (f10, f20, f30, f50fd,...) are famous for it's almost slr-like image quality, especially in terms of noise and colors. i just bought a used f30 from a dpc'er, the camera has'nt arrived yet but its reviews look awesome!
i think canon and sony make good p&s also with nice features, well built and decent IQ. |
