I'm wondering if DPCers know of a point and shoot that shoots video well and can zoom while shooting, and costs about $200 or less. Our old Canon A70 is due for replacing, and since we use the Rebel for still shots, we'd like to have a pocket-sized video camera. When it works right these days, the A70 limits clip length to 30 seconds, but it looks like many of today's cams don't have that limit anymore.

So, what's your opinion of the best small point-and-shoot for video purposes? Thanks for your input!

Anyone have a suggestion or two...?

Most pocket P&S cameras only have a 3x zoom anyway ... the Canon S3 IS (S5 is the current model) can zoom 12x during video, has a dedicated button to start video recording; it can record up to about six minutes in a single clip. However, they are somewhat over your budget at $300+ ...

It could be a great second/backup camera for you -- it can do just about everything your SLR can do except save in RAW and acquire sensor dust ... ;-)

Why don't you switch to Nikon and get the soon-to-be released D90? :) (It shoots 720p video).

Sensor dust, no. RAW from the S3/5? Hell yes. Just takes some work.

The Panasonic Lumix TZ4 has a stabilized 12X zoom that works while shooting video and runs about $220. Move up to the TZ5 and you can film in hi-def.

Thanks for the replies, all! I neglected to mention that my wife and I would also like to have the camera be pocket-sized.
Yeah, having a dSLR with video capability would be nice, but it's not in the budget, and it's definitely not pocket-sized...
