Ok - here's a question that I feel pretty silly asking - but I can't seem to find the answer so I thought I would ask the clever folk out there :- )
I've just bought a WD My Book Mirror link which is fine and meets my needs.
It comes pre-configured as raid 1 which is also fine . . and when I look at it's properties I see all the stuff I have copied on, along with the statement that it is a 1tb device, with only 500gb allowed to be used (makes sense due to the Raid 1).
But here's the question - how do I actually know it's backing up the data to the other drive ??
I don't seem to be able to look at the other drive directly and I'm kind of nervous that if the first drive goes 'pop' there will be nothing on the other one . .
Any suggestions ? |

Does it have any supplied software to notify you when one drive goes bad? From the sounds of it the RAID configuration is on the BIOS level of the drive, so you would need to access that I would think...
Don't know if that helps... |

Unless you can diagnose the status of the drives using some WD-provided software, the only way to guarantee that the drive is mirrored correctly would be to open up the casing and unplug/remove one of the drives :)

Yup thats about the only way you will know... I dont have any WD external drives but I do have about 9TB of useable drive space mirrored consisting of nothing but WD drives and love em :) including 4 500gb drives I dropped in to my Drobo recently

| The product specs show that it comes with a software CD. It likely has a utility to test the integrity of the array and so forth. If you used the CD to set up, see if you installed all the software, or browse the CD for the utilities it comes with. |

I just looked at the Manual Here and on page 14 it shows the WD Drive manager that is used to monitor the status of the Raid as well as the drives them selves...

Dave thanks for that - despite having a search I didn't come across that info. It looks really useful.
What's a little more concerning is that I don't seem to have the icons either. I've just downloaded a copy of the latest software from WD so I'll try that.
As a general statement I had hoped that there would be some indication that files were being actively copied between drives - other wise I am always going to fret that if one drive pops the other might turn out to be empty : ( |

As long as you set it up properly at first then you should be good, also if the icon isnt showing make sure you dont have the task bar set to hide inactive icons... right click the task bar, select properties and near the bottom should be a box to check or uncheck "hide inactive icons" make sure its off. As well after installing the WD Drive utility make sure you reboot to ensure everything is running properly...

Yay - I've found the Raid Manager and it claims everything is running smoothly
- I guess I just have to hope and pray that my 200gb of photos are safe and well as it seems I will never really know until it's too late. |

This technology has been in use for decades. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. |

I'm sure you are right - I'm just a visual person so I like to be able to see things rather than assume :- )
Thanks to everyone for their input and help |

If you're visual & I read the manual right, just keep an eye on the LED on the front. So long as this is green, you're good to go.
The LED will tell you if one of the drives has become corrupted by turning yellow and flashing. If so, just pick up another drive to replace the bad one with & the unit will automatically duplicate all the files onto it. If something real bad has happened (eg. both drives have gone corrupt), the LED will turn red & you can worry about that then (you could probably recover files, but it gets more iffy).
all the best with it. It looks like a nice unit :-) |
