Well I finally did it.. I used Live.com for cashback savings and ordered the following items!
Nikon D300, price: $1624.88 - $243.73 cashback = $1381.15
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM II (backorder) - price: $799.00 - $119.85 cashback = $679.15
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro - price: $399.99 - $40.00 cashback = $359.99
Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight Flash - price: $314.95 - $$31.50 cashback = $283.46
so total for a camera, two decent lenses and a flash was around $2700. I think I got some good deals :)
my questions... I want to get an extender for the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 but am unsure what is the best one to get.. any recommendations? and when I sell my D50 and some of my accessories, I should keep my SB-600 right? it can be used remotely with the sb-800, right?

Hey congrats there!!
I am contemplating getting a new DSLR myself.. so when you say you used Live.com for cashback, what does that mean? Did you just use that to search for deals?? |

Congrats! Thats some really nice kit you've ordered!
After a year of drooling I'm ordering one myself once I get paid at the end of the month, much planning and overtime means that I should be able to have it soon (please don't give me a nasty suprise Mr Norwegian tax man...). Im also upgrading from the D50 and I know the feeling of anticipation! |

I'm pretty sure you have only two choices... get the Sigma 1.4x, or the Sigma 2x. I have the 1.4x, which works pretty well (basically turning the 200mm into nearly 300). The teleconverter is a specific one that only works with their lenses. The 1.4x will cost you one f-stop, and the 2x will cost you 2 stops.
Enjoy all your new toys!

thanks alanfreed... I thought I might have to get the Sigma model.. I was thinking on the 1.4x, how's that work for you? nice sharp images? I read somewhere I might could use a kenko one, but the quality is not as nice. Since the D300 is a DX format camera, isn't the 200mm really more to begin with? and add a 1.4x it would be more than 300mm right?.. if not I might get the 2.0 for birding or whatnot...
and for information about Live.com Cashback <-- click there.. you sign up, and log in each time before you search for something. Use the website, //search.live.com/cashback/stores to search, its an emerchant site, and you can even find some merchants who offer up to 62% off. You order via live.com (enter search item, click product then choose a store, order, get email from live.com) and you earn cashback. After 60 days the money is able to be withdrawn. Its a great deal, and its real, people have already began to get their money from when it started two months ago. They had 25% off ebay buy it now at first, but its at 8% off ebay now. Here is another link on Slick Deals to help you understand, Slick Deals Forum.

Yes, since the camera already has a crop factor, the addition of the teleconverter to the 200 makes it close to a 450mm compared to the normal full-crop. I've never noticed any real loss of quality when I use it. It's great to get the extra reach... it's just a bummer that I can only open it to f4 with it, though. I use this combination to shoot Steelers games, mainly because I'm not ready to shell out the big $$ for a 300mm 2.8.
The only real problem I've ever had is that once in a great while, particularly when it's really cold out, the teleconverter doesn't seem to fit 100% well on the lens/camera. It can actually get a teeny bit of wiggle room, and that has actually been enough for it to miss shots because it's not aligned perfectly. To be honest, I'd love to sell this lens and upgrade to a Nikon version with VR.
Overall I have been happy with it, and I use it a lot at weddings, too.
