If I decide to buy the Rebel here in Canada, I will spend $1499.00, for the body alone. BUT, if I decide to purchase through the U.S., I can expect to pay $1173.00 after the conversion.
so why do I give Canada my business when it's cheaper through the U.S.?
has anyone got any suggestions? I plan on making the purchase shortly.
also: I'm assuming the Canon EOS 300 lens will fit the EOS 300D body right? |

Don't forget that you'll be charged customs duties and brokerage fee on top of that when it clears the US/Canada border. You'll have to pay this to whoever is delivering it to your door.
I've seen a lot of Rebel bundled with lenses/accessories by Canadian stores on ebay.ca. They're not for auction but for purchase. You might wanna check those.

You'll pay the same Provincial Tax you'd pay in your province. That is charged at the border. You will not pay duties, however there might be a brokerage fee from your shipper ... FedEX or Purolator might charge you $100 to handle the cross border paperwork. US Postal will charge a lot less.
Don't forget that the warranty might not be recognised by Canon Canada. This means you'll have to ship your camera to the States if something happens. This will only prolong your wait if you send it to get fixed, which is already ridiculous (6 weeks?).
The US dollar has weakened considerably since the start of 2003, which explains the big difference between american and canadian prices. I bought a 550EX flash at B&H Photo. Everything included (shipping, taxes) set me back $550 Canadian. The same flash sells for $650 in Canada (plus shipping plus taxes).
It's worth considering, but make sure you know all the implications.

I bought my 10D in the US while I was there, but were I looking for one now to buy via interweb/mail it would still be considerably cheaper for me to buy overseas. For instance at the time I paid (prices in Aussie $) $2200 in the US when here you could hunt around and find it here for $3600. That is a HUGE saving.
All I had to do was change the plug (not the transformer, just the bit that plugs into the wall socket) and that cost me 5 mins and about $5. For $10 I could have just got an adapter and haved the 5 mins ;)
I still have warrenty on it, but would need to send it back to the US. That is a risk I feel is well worth $1400 (about $900 US$).
I believe in buying Australian ... but sorry, I am not going to pay $1400 for that.

I'd hate to throw business towards this company, just because they sold me a computer then when the company that made it went out of business I really had talk them into covering the warranty, but, this is the cheapest place I've seen the Canon Rebel (I really haven't looked to much though). And I'm sure they don't deal with the warranty at all. I don't know if they ship to Canada or not though.

$999 is not a bargain. That is the street price that is listed in all the magazines (and the company's listed price) and it comes with the EOS Rebel lens that will only fit on the Rebel and cannot be bought separate from the body. However, the EOS 300D also fits any other Canon lenses. |

yes that's true, i've found it for several places at $899 US for the body alone which is all I need. That lens is where the extra $100 comes into play. I already have the EOS 300 SLR and I'll be keeping the lens, selling the body. |

circuitcity.com is offering a 10% rebate (in the form of a gift card) on all digicams $299 and up. you can get the 300D for $999, but get a $100 card on top of that, which you can use for a CF card or another battery, etc...

Here's a bizarre option for you! I saw this on the scoreboard at the football game in Cleveland this afternoon. When they announced the winner, the stadium announcer said that "with this new camera, you can take photos just like the pros on the sidelines!"
The really funny thing was that as the announcer was saying this, there was a shot of ME on the jumbotron... with my Nikon! :)
