I was just ask what types of batteries I used in my flash and I come to realize that I really didnt give it much thought when I bought the batteries for it and I have the Energizer rechargables.

Is there more to it than one brand vs the others, and what are you guys using for batteries in your flashes?

Thanks
Rich

I have always used Energizer Rechargeable. The normal Alkaline you won't get much use before they die. They last about 1/4 of the time a rechargeable does.

Duracell rechargable ... I have 2 sets and take them along with the charger anytime I plan to use the flash ...

Well I know not to use the akaline batteries. But my question is geared more toward the differences in the rechargables. Are there quality differences? Will one perform in rapid succession better than the other, will one hold a better charge than the other? You know stuff like that.

Sorry for not being very specific before hand

Check the amperage. I have three sets and the amperage varies. (1800 mAh, 2100 mAH, 2400 mAh....I could be wrong on the last one). The higher the rating the longer they last. Energizer's are what I use too.

With the 2400mAh batteries have you experienced over heating or any funky issues with them?

I don't know about for flash but my mp3 player loved energizer rechargeables, the green and silver ones. mmm, good times.

I use several brands (Energizer happens not to be among them, but not for any particular reason). All of them are 2700's now.

I used the Eneloop AA in my FL36 flash and they give great recycle times. Plus they came pre-charged and will hold a charge for a LONG time. Have two packs (8 batteries), so four sets for the flash. Did a wedding and only ended up with two sets being used. About $11 for 4-pack at Wolf.

Hi David,
Could you possibly let me know which batteries you are using?

Thank you,
Rich

I have and use Energizer rechargables in both of my flashes. I also use 8 of them in my external battery pack for the flash. I have 5 sets, so 20 batteries, to give you an idea of how long they last. Just using 4 in the flash I took 450 shots this weekend covering 2 events for the paper and one for myself. I never charged that batteries that I put in the flash until I was done and repacking gear for todays work. I was using either fill, or bounced for all of it. Granted the new 580EXII is alot better on battery drain then the prior model. But still I can easily shoot a full days wedding and reception on one set in the flash, and the battery pack.

BTW they are 2500mAH batteries, and the set I was using is marked 12-06-S1 meaning they have been in service since December of 06. When I get the feeling one or more in a set may be letting me down, I give them to my son and he uses them for toys. He has some of mine that were started being used in 04 and still going.

Depends on usage... If you use them all at once then high Mah in the 2700 range are great. If intermittent use then I swear by the low discharge ones but they are only available in 2100 type Mah range. I love the low discharge since they are not flat everytime you use them like the other ones...

Energizer 2500's for me. I can buy them here at a store called the "Dollar Store" at $10 for 4 with the slow charger. I have a 15min charger that I use for traveling, but it heats them up to the point that they go bad after a couple of months if I use the fast charger daily on a set. They seem to last about a year or longer using the slower charger. So far I have never had to change batteries in my SB 80 Nikon flash during a shoot, except once at a wedding where I didn't want to take any chances.
I use them in my Fuji S3 camera too, and get about 400 manual shots, or 250-300 auto everything shots per set of 4. I tried other brands but they don't perform as well. I haven't tried the 2700's yet, as there has been no need to upgrade.

Most of my 2700's are Lenmars, but I have several brands (can't remember the others at the moment).

Hi Robs,

Could you possibly tell me what you mean as flat, do you mean dead?

Thanks,
Rich

Yeah, I mean loss of charge..... The regular rechargeable batteries lose their charge over a very short period of time. The low loss ones are FAR better at keeping a charge, so better for intermittent use.
