Pretty sure this is a scam. I don't think the National Geographic Society have any problems getting a pro photographer from their own ranks to do a tv show...

I would first think scam due to the email too but since he does work in the tv business I would have to think otherwise...of course he may not know it's a scam either. |

Pretty sure it's not a scam.
Got it from a friend, of a friend.
What's wrong with gmail? Too conventional?
I guess there is always a chance.

The name of the production company, or the company was not given to me.
I had no idea this was from the NGS.

Pretty standard "cattle call".
All production companies put out a blanket audition for all potential actors, in this case photographers.
They probably do have some photographers in mind, but like any company, want to cover all their bases to make sure they got the best of the best to choose from.
Kind of like 'American Idol' when they tour the nation to find the best talent available, and widdle away from there.

If they ask for money, then it is a scam.
If they want to see your portfolio, then I would have to differ.

I agree 100%: why WOULDN'T they go ahead and cast their nets? They may very well have someone in mind, sure, but that doesn't mean they're unaware that there might be someone out there who's a perfect fit for what they want to do, and of whom they've never heard.

I would question a gmail address simply because most companies with any profile would want to try and get their own name in their email address. ie askngs@nationalgeographic.com . . or whatever
gmail doesn't smack of corporate - it comes across as an individual (possibly working out of bedroom or attic) :- )
But hey - I could be wrong

Not sure in this case, but sometimes there's a legal requirement that a job be "publicly posted" ...

Arguably, National Geographic didn't WANT their name on this particular "casting call" because they'd be deluged with wannabes? I donno, just a thought... In any case, whoever's overseeing the casting call is probably someone hired by NG (assuming this is a legit thing) to do just that, so they wouldn't HAVE email through the NG server, was my first thought.
But heck, I donno... The one most likely amongst us to know would be the OP, he being in the biz and all, and he seems to feel this is probably legit...

WHOOOOOO, I just want to say that if anyone loses money, or finds themselves tied up wearing speedos, a gag in your mouth, and some fat Asian hovering over you with drool pouring out his mouth and body odor consuming the air you are allowed to breath, don't blame me.
Applicant beware.

This job is posted in numerous photography forums, and (surprise!) DPC is the only place where conspiracy theories are abounding about it, as far as I can see. Had someone been asked to send in a case of unmarked bills to a Nigerian address or something, I'd be right there on the conspiracy bandwagon, but this seems pretty normal.
One fly in the ointment for anyone interested in this opportunity... in several of the other places I found this posting, it also mentions: "**Materials must be submitted by 8/27/08 for consideration."

DPC is full of scared little girls. You need not worry, they are looking for men, not little girls, you are all safe to play with your dollies...
