I really need to get is a remote release for my F717, but it seems everyone is sold out of the RM-DR1 remote. I used Sony's Live help and here's the answer I got.

You:I've been looking all over for a Sony RM-DR1 remote for my Sony F717. It seems like everyone is out of stock. On the SonyStyle website the RM-DR1 is nowhere to be found, and it suggests the RM-VD1 as a substitute. I prefer the all black color and sleeker style of the RM-DR1. Has this unit been discontinued or is it just on backorder due to manufacturing delays?
Daniel: Please give me a moment while I get this information for you.
You: ok, thanks
Daniel: The remote control that is compatible with your DSC-F717 is the RM-VD1
You: so the RM-DR1 is discontinued then?
Daniel: I will forward the page for the unit.
Daniel: Yes
Daniel: I will forward the order or can you take it from here?
You: i got it from here thanks

That really sucks the RM-VD1 looks like a cheap clip-on piece of crap.

The strange thing is that I email B&H Photo and they said it was on backorder and not discontinued. and Amazon.com states that theRM-DR1 will be in stock soon.

Sorry for the double post. There was a "site maintenance" sceen that came up and I thought it didn't go through.

I own both remotes and use the RM-DR1. I definately like the feel of the RM-DR1, having a remote is very nice.

Can either of those manually adjust the shutter speed? Do they have a Bulb feature? where you manually control when the shutter opens and closes..

I have the RM-DR1 and use it all the time. Because it is wire connected to the camera it has more in common with a standard cable release than a remote.

Based on the picture, I would say both have the same functionality - They control the camera on and off switch, the camera zoom and the shutter.

The RM-DR1 does not have any shutter speed or aperture controls.

The F-717 does not have a bulb setting, dangit!

can't the remotes function as a bulb feature?

Unfortunately no, the remotes can't do that.
