Ok, I've been waiting since CS to upgrade for something compelling from Adobe to justify the near $200 upgrade prices. I wasn't happy that CS2 came out just after I bought CS, and I was outside of the upgrade period. (What really ticked me off though is that I couldn't get upgrades for the raw converter anymore for CS, and I bought a new camera shortly after that, so I couldn't use the RAW files for CS.)

Now I think I'm about to do it again... DOH!
I need to upgrade my Lightroom copy--that's a given! I love lightroom. So I was about to fork over the $99. As usual, I go find a coupon code good for 15% off. GREAT!

Then I notice that it will give me a discount on Photoshop too: to $169 for the upgrade. Nice. But then I note better still, if I buy CS3 and LR2 at the same time, I get CS3 for $150 as an upgrade, while getting LR for $85, with the coupon code.

So I'm inclined to buy both.

But yet, I think CS4 is on the horizon? Does anyone know about that, and the approximate release date? (Also, the grace period for a free upgrade if you just upgraded--is it 30 days?)

In the spirit of the Who's "won't get fooled again", I passed on the CS3 upgrade, and only upgraded LR :)

I am sure the 64 bit version of CS4 will be much better than having CS3, and since I plan on buying a new camera soon, I don't want to repeat my mistake where I can't upgrade the raw converter on an prior version of Adobe CS (in this case CS3 when CS4 comes out). I think, by the way, that policy sucks!

TBH I dont think they could release any number of features that would compel me to upgrade to another version of Photoshop, I am currently use CS2 and am incredibly happy with it. Plugins are not a big issue for me as I have about 4 third party plugins installed and they do everything I need (Photomatix, Neatimage, Extensis Mask & Imaging Factory`s Convert to BW Pro). The thing is it is so easy to get caught playing `catch up` with software AND hardware. I think if you want a upgraded version of something, just go and buy it. If the newer one comes out and it has a MUST HAVE feature then thats sods law.. But to be honest, there is nothing on the horizon that excites me in the Photoshop world that would tempt me to upgrade (except for the tighter integration with Lightroom 2, but its not a reason to fork out the $$$s for me..)

I do think the upgrade from CS2 to CS3 was much more compelling (and worth the money) than the upgrade from CS to CS2. So for anyone still sitting tight with CS, I'd recommend upgrading to CS3 as there are immediate benefits. If you already have CS2 and can afford it, CS3 is worth the upgrade, but otherwise, I think you may be right in sitting tight and waiting for CS4 (I know it's out there being beta tested already, but I don't know of any kind of time frame, still I don't think it is too far off).

The CS4 beta is already out. It's codenamed "Stonehenge" (or was, a while ago). Of course, you have to acquire it through less than legal channels, but hey. From what I've seen it's pretty similar to CS3 but that was quite a while ago.

I was in the same boat as you. I have CS2 and was thinkin of upgrading to 3. It's been out a while now, and I'm waiting till 4 comes out now to get it. I do think I'm gonna get LR2 when my trial runs out. My NX2 software is almost over and I need something to open my D700 files and it doesn't have an upgrade for cs2 yet.

I agree and would use different words..... but Adobe has a habit of gouging customers. I am a very reluctant customer of theirs.

I don't remember where I read this but I heard something about CS3.3. Anyone else? Or is that the latest update that I haven't gotten to?

the CS3.3 I believe was for the Creative Suite package. It just included the newest version of Adobe Acrobat Professional. I don't think anything else changed within the other programs of the creative suite other than that. (i think)
