I must agree your statement rings true. I apologize for misunderstanding at first, being too quick on the trigger. Yeah and sometimes people aren't even sure if the shot is good or not and in the hopes that'll it appeal to the majority, post it. I hope people don't think that everyone enters to just win ribbons but that it's more like the icing on the cake. The ultimate satisfaction is entering a shot you like first, and that others enjoy viewing the shot and share their views or have something they see in it that you don't, and if some don't like it, it adds to the drama hehe.

Still it's all in the name of learning this skill and putting our art's ;) content into it. It's big a creative outlet that feeds the mind and spirit. The healthy competition part of it just pushes us to do better and try new things. Not to say it doesn't feel crushing at times.

You say you've entered shot's you've not been proud of, and I'm sure it's true - but your stat's would suggest that your scores aren't just a matter of luck - rather they are well composed, created, captured and presented.
: - )

Thanks for the kind words. You're right there too. I try my best and it doesn't always come out the way I invisioned or sometimes tend to overcomplicate. I can name more than few shots that where the hardest to get and didn't score more than a 5.8. Not complaining just saying. All in all I did learn a lot from those.

I wanted to add, the more I've been here the more I seem to stray off the path of the majority more often. I see things in shots I wouldn't have when I first signed up. Not just a by product of DPC but being exposed to more art/photography in general.

One of the reasons I have stuck around here is that my dad brought me up to not like cheap praise. cheap praise does not exist here. If I wanted cheap praise, I would post a shot in 20 or 30 of the "awards" groups on Flickr and let the comments of "brilliant" and "nice shot" roll in.

I haven't entered many challenges, but I've run the gamut from entering photos that I think deserved better than they scored, to photos that I knew would do poorly but that I liked anyway.

I'm grateful to some friends I've made here who often go out of their way to leave positive comments on my photos when a challenge ends, even on the photos that don't do well. I don't think it's cheap praise, I think it's friendly encouragement.

Yes, there's a difference.

Ever time I enter challenge with an image I really like, something I enjoyed shooting and have processed into what I wanted to say with the shot and then watch my score hover around 5.0, I like to remind my self about how much money Van Gogh made while he was alive.

I agree with you 100% on this one - this site has opened my eyes hugely to what can be done from the ultra sharp, ultra crisp studio shot's ( like the water droplets) right through to the Blur and layer galleries.

For anyone with any curiosity, there is inspiration by the bucket load here . .

I've improved immensely since joining here, and have developed my skills exponentially past what I ever could have imagined. Part of that turned out to be discovering I had talent in a couple of different genres I'd never explored before.

This site delights, annoys, inspires, and challenges me on a daily basis.

It's ALL good!
