Ah - facial bruises :- ) Many years ago I had a friends horse swing it's head square into my face, and knock me clean off my feet - breaking my nose badly at the same time . . bless it . .

Not so unusual with animal type challenges, but I suspect that your score in the first day or so reflected the views of Horse lovers who all piled in to look at the shot's and vote, after that everyone else came along, many with the satndard questions " is it bright, shiny and colourful? "

To be honest I thought there would be some much stronger photo's in here - but as in any (outdoor) subject, you need the time, the weather, the opportunity, and, preferably, the subject doing something interesting.

I struggled to get most of those things and only submitted my shot because there were so few entries. But that said there are , as ever, a few delightful shot's - and I'm sure when they do a Horse(s) II there will be about 250 entries :- )

I am currently sporting a "third eye" of a big goose-egg/bruise, from an untentional meeting of my young mare's jaw line with my forehead. She is half Lipizzan but looks and acts purebred and we play extensively at liberty, she may perform in more than a YouTube video down the road--we're learning to dance together like those silly skilled border collies do, and she is very fast. Horse heads weigh what, about 100 lbs? My hairdresser laughed her ass off when she saw my forehead, once the bangs were swept away, she's also a distance rider.

Can't really do well with horses without a sense of humor, eh? Especially in my sport-endurance riding. Keeps ya humble too.

OK...just finished counting...approximately 110 checkmarks (this was before morning coffee) and there's 122 entries. Kinda annoying that I gave at least one those checkmark-less ones a 10 and a great comment, but some members seem to rarely or never put a checkmark down, no matter how good the comment. *shrugs*

Out of curiousity, how do TWH seem to do in endurance? My client is considering getting into endurance, but I don't know if she realizes yet that you also have to have a fairly good level of fitness yourself!

Yes, a horse will make a liar out of you any day! In terms of injuries...countless minor bruises, the occasional kick (some from being between two horses, I believe only two were aimed at me - both by Appy mares, lol). I've had my foot stepped on a gazillion times, one time badly ebough that foot was sore for 4 months after. I think 2 black eyes from being clocked in the head by a horse's jaw, then a year later got a more serious whack right over right eye, needed stitches. Had the same horse give me both a boutonniere deformity and a broken collarbone - my first ever, at the age of 37.

they do awesome in Competitive Trail Riding and I think there are many that do endurance great too. If she gets him in shape for endurance, her body will follow...... if she's the one doing the conditioning.

As she rides the horse for longer and longer duration, it will have the effect of getting her to the level of fitness necessary to compete. She'll find she's able to eat and drink at the canter and running walk, talk without getting out of breath, etc. If she's wanting to be competitive rather than most of us who go for completion, then it would behoove her to be able to get off and tail up hills, lead downhills at a jog--the more fit she is the more she can actively support her horse with her body position, especially with core strength. Insuring the horse is using itself properly is key--working off of the back end, keeping the front end light and not pounding. (I had TWHs when I first got into endurance, they were too young and too old, and I lost my treasured girl at 5 who was gonna be a TWH versatility superstar.)

Thanks for the info, Cristy and Lynne, and she is lucky that Traveller is indeed built uphill naturally and very easy to collect and elevate, as I've experienced myself when asking for a running walk...though one time the same set of cues resulted in him pacing, still don't know how I got that! I have seen at least one endurance rider in training along a nearby road with an Arab. Next time I should try and get info. BTW is it just me, or does endurance seem to attract a proportionately larger number of men?

*you may now return to your regularly scheduled thread*
