Regardless of any efforts for interpretative, creative or personal definition - most conventional dictionaries have a pretty good explanation of the word abstract.
I would say that abstract visual devices & qualities are implemented in the above, but the narrative is obvious and may not be considered strictly abstract.

Lets not forget that the object photographed may be an abstract representation of the photographers views. This would also constitute and abstract image.

Just another point view

in basic editing, are you allowed to have a border that isn't exactly square? I'm thinking that cutting out the corners with sharp triangles looks good for my image, just not sure if it's legal.

I dont know why people are defining abstract as a picture where you cant identify the subject.

abstract art
Can you tell what the subject is? is it not abstract?

There's abstract and there's dpc abstract. We will get to see the diff in a couple of hours.

Do not confuse "abstract art" with "DPC abstract". The two do not intersect...

I'm looking forward to this one. I'm really looking forward to the Posthumous awards for this challenge.

Well I'm surprised/disappointed - not a single color image in this challenge! Lots of great entries, IMO. Glad I bailed out and pulled my lackluster entry at the last minute. Good luck to all!

I think I spotted more than a few that started as color images...I will make sure I punish them severely when I get around to voting.

You are kidding, right? Common sense says NEVER EVER EVER use the B&W filter in-camera. You can do a better job in PP that the camera can in PP (and it IS post-processing, the sensor is still picking up the color). And then you have a color version if you like as well.

I must clarify....if it appears that the photog used any tools whether in camera or post processing to convert the image from color to b/w...

If lighting conditions are right in camera b/w can work, or the shot does have to be tweaked in contrast later on in PP for sure. I think a the in camera jpg b/w + raw is a great team if shooting in b/w is your thing.

Some examples of in camera b/w

So long as you keep the RAW I don't care. But for JPG only shooters who set the camera to B&W mode, that's silly. You lose all the color information and can never reclaim it.
