I'll give this one a shot, too. Can't promise a pic a day, but sounds like fun! count me in. |

Count me in. I haven't done any of the side challenges yet but I really enjoy IR. I have a P&S camera which was converted to shoot in infrared. I don't always stick to traditional IR shots- some of the things I use it for are just shots taken with the IR camera. I have had it for over a year now. IR definately encourages you to experiment.

The side challenge runs the whole month of September, and we start the first day of that month. Trevor will start another thread for the posting of images, and we'll put a link to that thread here too, so everyone will know where to go.
I'm pleased to see so many on board for this! If I get some time before the 1st, I will post some links to various IR processing techniques as a resource for those who might not already be aware of them. |

I'd like to join as well if possible. I've only used my point & shoot camera for IR work in the past but looking to by an IR filter for my 20D. Does anyone know how IR sensitive this camera is? I also need to buy a new filter. Any recommendations on brand name or type? Do you use step up or down rings to accomodate all your lenses? Thank you.

with the 20D...you will need to set white balance before putting on the filter, at least I did when I had it..then will take 10 seconds or more on exposure. This is the main reason I use the Sony F707...takes in 1/60 sec exposure with the filter

The 20D is not very IR sensitive at all, you will be needing long shutter times to get decent results. I hear the Hoya gives good results but are expensive. I have the Cokin IR filter and had ok results but not what I really wanted so I converted a camera. |

I Pm'ed you but I never saw a response, sorry. I'm happy to have you on as your work was some of the stuff that really got me interested in IR photography. Welcome aboard!
Now I see it, blind I am:)

That would be most helpful. I'm finding it more difficult to edit the images. Taking them is time consuming but rather easy.

This is a handy site for IR sensitive comparisons.

The filter I'm using is 72mm which only fits one of my lenses, Tokina MF. I'll definitely be purchasing a stepdown ring or two.

Do you consider shots like this (taken at the San Diego Zoo a couple days ago) which was taken with my infrared converted camera but does not really include IR effects or would you prefer shots with more infrared elements in them (like dark skies and light foliage)? I use my camera for both types of shots.
The camera was set to capture images in black and white and processing includes a gausian blur layer on the background plus tinting via a Selective Color layer.
I bet there aren't many IR shots of Tiger Woods. This would certainly qualify. I assume that submitted pictures must be taken during, not prior to, the Challenge as usual.

You might want to PM JeffryZ. He hasn't been very active lately, but he does some darn fine IR work. |
Just reading through the entire thread. Thanks for the nomination!

Any infrared is fine, there are no restrictions - you can process it however you like. Some shots are more suited to the "typical" IR look than others, but you can process IR any number of ways; we really just expect that the base image should be IR (as opposed to creating an IR-like look in Photoshop on a regular image), but the final presentation is completely open for people to do whatever they want.
Since people who don't like IR tend not to like the 'false color' look (or the look that people are most familiar with, when they think of IR), I'd say that the more interpretations of IR (different processing techniques, different subject matter) we can post during the month the better, to show the whole range of looks you can get from it.
Neat hogs, by the way. :) |

Ah. :)
Speaking for myself, I've got folders-full of IR shots from the last few months that I haven't had time to process, and I intend to use this Side Challenge as an excuse to dig through them. I want to try some more shots during the month too, but not all my posts will be of images taken in September.
I don't have any problem with people using older IR shots to post here - dig them out, do something new with them and post away! |

I'm with Karen, use photos from whenever. If you have a bunch that you have taken already and this will motivate you to process them then go ahead and use those. If you want to limit yourself to shots from the month only then by all means go for it, just have fun. I think the interesting thing with IR is that you get different looks and unexpected results from time to time. I think sharing these, even when they don't give the appearance of IR, can really showcase the fun and beauty of this type of photography, so post whatever as long as it is taken IR. |

This workflow is what I use 99% of the time. I get some very good results from it, but some images just don't work with it and you have to make some tweaks here and there.
Has anyone else used this formula/workflow?
