Post processing experimentation...
Fullsize ~170KB @ 1200x800
Manipulated image of an angel statue that sits in our backyard. The original image was first desatured and level/contrast adjusted. Then a slight slight blue tone was added to give a more depressive feeling. The background behind the angel was removed by first duplicating the layer, applying a guassian blurr of about 10 and then setting the blending mode of the top layer to 'Color Burn'. It left me with just the angel and some really cool shadows on the details of its form. No spot editing so such manips would be legal for challenges, correct?
Likes
+ The overall dark feeling of the image... almost gothic
+ Shadows on the face and elsewhere on the statue's details
Dislikes
+ Image is focused on the top of the angel's head, rather than face/eyes
+ Image might be considered too dark/underexposed
Original Image taken: 1/180 @ F3.5 @ 100iso

Thank you for sharing your technique. If I had to remove the background, I would have used spot editing. Your technique is much better and faster.
I only don't think it is legal for the challenges as you use a blending mode other than normal mode:
"Layers: Only adjustment layers may be used, and the layer must be applied in normal mode. All other types of layers and all other blending methods (modes) are prohibited. Layers may not be used to apply a prohibited effect to an image."
Anyway I like this photo, the tone of it and the border. Well done! |

Interesting technique and the result is great. Especially when you compare it to the original shot. It's amazing what you can do digitally! Even though film tradionalists will whine again about Photoshop and how this is not 'real' photography ... ;o) |

Masterful use of photoshop here audioaltima! It always amazes me what you can with photoshop if you fiddle around!
I agree with all of your likes for the image, but I have to disagree with some of your dislikes!
In my opinion, in general people overexpose their images on the site, but that may just be my monitor, and your's is perfectly exposed, especially for the overall mood of the shot!
The focus of the image, while it is on the top of the head, actually add to the expression on the statues face, increases the deep look of contemplation or confusion. With this in mind, the title 'Enchanted' does seem suited to the shot. The photo has a darker, 'gothic' type of feeling, and enchanted doesn't convey that too me. I think perhaps you should look at the expression on the statues face, and the overall mood of the photo, and consider a different title!
Great shot! Love it!
