I'm considering getting a 300D from the US when I visit Boston in January. I sent an email to Customs & Excise, who were very helpful in telling me what's what. Thought it may be interest to other Brits.

"Basically you have a travellers allowance of £145 other goods/gifts,if the camera is over this(& you can't knock £145 off the price paid)then duty plus VAT will be due.
If you want a digital camera then these are free of duty but there will
still be 17.5% VAT,if it's a normal still camera then there will be 4.2%
duty plus VAT."
