To bad it doesn't seem to have USM, a "micro motor"

Hate to poo-poo Canon, but... anything with that kind of range probably doesn't have really great image quality anyway. (there are just so many trade-offs to make to get that kind of zoom range)

On the other hand, it probably makes a great Walk Around or Vacation Lens. Put that one lens on your camera and never change lenses during your entire vacation.

Price seems about $100 too high, but maybe it'll come down. I still think they'll sell like hot cakes. It looks like it was purposefully designed to appeal to amateurs and not to advanced hobbyists or pros - which makes sense actually, because it would have been too expensive to make an 11x "L" lens.

And there's one for sale in Buy/Sell.

Now back to your regularly scheduled 18-200 chat. I agree with the above posts: the zoom range comes at a price to other factors, and I didn't see a price listed, either. =)

I see a $699 estimated selling price at the bottom of this page.

$700 for the 18-200

and as for the 11x L - my point was that it would be expensive, and your link proves that ... it's $2300.00

BTW, multiplying 18-200mm by 1.6 gives 28.8-320mm -- not too far from that 28-300mm, both are 3.5-5.6

I dunno, I really have very few complaints about the 18-200 Nikon. The main one is zoom creep. And a bit of distortion at some focal lengths, but really, I think it's so good it's hard to justify buying the pro lenses, other than to get a bit more light in.

Of course, I haven't tried any primes other than the 50. Maybe they'd change my mind.

And I consider myself at least somewhat discerning.

So I think, if they do as good of a job as Nikon, they'll have a huge market for this, amateur and prosumer, and even some pros.

The Nikon 18-200 was in such demand that people were selling it for upwards of $1000 for the first year, and the list price is $699 or so.

My main complaint is a touch of edge softness, not really noticeable in a full image but shows up badly in corner crops for DPC. My recent Macro entry of the cereal was such a crop, still looks ok but nothing like the center did. Maybe it is part DOF, I will have to play with it.

As for zoom creep, there are some instructions on the internet that suggest placing a 2.1875" rubber oring around the joint fixes the problem and isn't very noticeable. I haven't tried it personally.

I would have probably been willing to go that high, $1000, if I had previously used the lens. I wonder if the canon version will really match up, will be great to see the reviews in a few months.
