...it's over rated.
The show that I am working on, Leverage,
is primarily using three RED cameras.
They are the latest and greatest version that the Exec. Producer, Dean Devlin, purchased out of his own pocket.
Just like any camera, light is needed to help enhance what it sees. there is no such thing as a magic bullet for lighting, especially for feature films and television.
With all due respect to the RED, the camera does make great images, but it simply is just a camera that even the Genesis HD camera, or even a Panavision 35mm film camera could compete with.
OK, what really don't I like about the RED??? It is a computer with a lens. It can, and has, lost information on its hard drive creating more work than anticipated.
It's a new technology device that has a ways to go to be perfect.
Like I said, the imagery is outstanding, but it is just a machine, and as we know through history, all machines can, and will break down.

Hmm, so not worth the $18,000? The one thing I was disapointed with spec wise when I read about the RED was it's lack of super slow motion (shrug)

if I remember it will go up to about 120fps @ 2K rez, you can slow the video down pretty good at that. If you are talking about the cameras that you can watch a balloon pop over a 3 second span then you are prob gonna be paying a lot more as those run at 2000fps and you will prob pay a bit more than the Red is worth.

Another thing about the RED is we have to use twice the amount of smoke to even make the images look not so sharp.
Without the smoke,"*atmosphere", the RED is way too sharp. It simply looks like crap.
Another issue is that since it is all electronic, sometimes the eye piece can weird out, or the hard drive can stop working, or just moving it will make it freak out.
The RED would not be a good choice to take to the mountains, in rain or wet locations, the dessert, or the jungle. You are highly limited with the RED.
As far as the slow-mo, since the RED is a computer, can't post production just capture that balloon popping?

I have just started reading about RED being used by the military in Government Video. The camreaman that the military is using as its front man for this Has nothing but good things to say so far. And for intelligence work the enhanced and sharp image are of benifit when talking about getting good and accurate intel to our spec ops teams. |

I an see the benefits with intel, but for production values it's a dog.
The thing is, I can't see it being effective in combat. I do see it in a satalite, or a drone.
