Everytime I get Omaha Steaks (www.omahasteaks.com) They send a bag of dry ice. I can't help but play with it.

When I was in college one of my friends had an idea for a photo, he was going to do a long exposure in the dark of dry ice coming through the holes of a colander. I asked him how he was going to light it? and he replied "Fog is white." The shot didn't come out like he had planned.

Did I mention he wasn't one of my brighter friends.

Every time I get an Omaha Steaks shipment (my in-laws send us Omaha Steaks three times per year- nothing says love like big slabs of meat!) I get a little angry that I don't have something just waiting to shoot using dry ice.

Where did you buy the dry ice? When I was a kid you used to be able to buy some from ice cream shops, but I have called all over the place - ice cream shops, grocery stores, butchers, etc - and no one has any/will sell any.

order meat online, they send it to you. or you can go to the grocery store, they have it there

Most marinas will have it in the bait shop or even a grocery store nearby. Many sailors use it to keep their coolers cool longer than traditional ice. We can get it around here most of the time.

Sorry to sidetrack, but were does one get dry ice?

when I was little the guy with the ice cream cart walkin down the street would give me dry ice

They have the ice cream push carts here, and they do have dry ice at the place where they load them for the day. They also have it at a couple of tackle shops near the gulf coast nearby. It's popular for boating because it lasts so long.
If you want to play with it, be sure to wear gloves as it will cause instant frostbite to skin. It is -109 deg F at atmospheric pressure.
In my music playing days, we had a small barrel with a small blower fan in it and flexible duct hoses coming out of it. We would fill it about 1/2 with hot water, turn on the fan, and drop a couple of cups of dry ice into it to make fog for stage effects. It was fun, but made things a little damp for a while.

I get a ton of it all the time at the lab I work at

I have fun playing around with it

Also keep in mind that dry ice is pure carbon dioxide. It is heavier than air, which is why it pours. It also displaces oxygen. So make sure your play ground is well ventillated. It has no smell, and if you are playing with a quantity of it, and evaporating it at higher rates, that if you are in a small unventillated space you could pass out and die.

Small amounts as shown here, should pose no problem. But if somebody were to run out and buy 25 pounds of that stuff, and say throw it in a bathtub of warm water to see the cool fog effects, it could pose a risk.

Shoot, and we thought it was the weed and alcohol doing that to our audiences when we ran the fog machine.

Also remember that pets on the floor will be much deeper into the CO2 when even using a little so you should make sure to move them elsewhere while playing.

Does anyone know if the cost of dry ice for cooling is more or less costly than regular ice? I have often debated before hurricanes if I should pack coolers with one or the other.

Hey everyone should also note that you can trip and break your neck on the way to the store to buy dry ice. So be really careful.

Yes, and I'm using my dying breaths to tell you that it is much cheaper for you to make ice from tap water than to attempt to freeze carbon dioxide.
