Ok, so I haven't been here long and the first 2 challenges I have entered have not finished voting but... Is it courtesy to explain a vote, or comment if one votes extreme on either side of the scale??
If I give a 1, I will explain why. If I give a 10, if will explain why. So far, I have done my best to give feedback but, for sure with these 2 votes. I want to understand what people like, don't like, or think can be improved, changed, or remain the same in a photograph.
Anyone else have thoughts? |

I agree that it is desirable to receive as many comments as possible, and to be able to understand why some people were strongly moved, either positively or negatively, by our entries. But as you note, commenting is a courtesy. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from voting just because they didn't have time, or the expertise, to comment. Votes are like comments in the sense that the more there are the better. |

I too do not think comments should be mandatory because I also would not want to discourage someone from voting because they simply had no time. But, I do think looking into mandatory comments on 1 or 10 votes may be worth while.
If one feels strongly enough to vote extreme, they should have some comments swirling around.

Check out these Search Results from the DPC forums.
Most of the threads around the middle of the first page (of 30 listed) are about this same topic. I didn't even bother to check on any other pages of results.
I think the bottom line out of all that discussion has been that comments -- especially on lower-scoring photos -- is highly desirable, but not practical to make mandatory in the DPC community. |

I agree there with general, it is not practical to make it mandatory.
If you were unable to give someone a 1 without making a comment revealing who you are then people would simply vote 2 to avoid that.
If you are forced to leave a comment but it is anonymous you'd get as many stupid comments as your would constructive ones. The constructive ones you get would probably be the ones you'd have got anyway.

Point well taken. I understand and I agree. I did not think it was practical but, it's a "in a perfect world"
Thanks Guys.

Vote 1 = they did not like the image - negative comment
Vote 10 = they really liked the image - positive comment
Seems straight forward enough to me.
Unfortunately, with the number of challenges, the increased number of submissions per challenge, and the vast variety of photography skills of the DPC community make it impossible to comment so much. But, it would be nice to receive more comments - but only if they are constructive. |
