Seriously, we're expecting downpours, thunderstorms, strong winds, flooding and a general pain in the axx for the next FOUR days! Schools have already been called off for tomorrow and may be out on Friday too (first week of school). The grocery stores are running out of essentials because everyone freaks out at the mention of a big storm and dashes out to buy all of the milk and water they can carry.
I think I'm going to stay indoors until September!

What!?!?!?!!?! I am all for better safe than sorry but I am utterly confused. Cindi, I don't understand why they are canceling school since the Hurricane Center has it just as a Tropical Storm and you don't even have a TS warning for your side of the state!. It is not over water so it isn't even picking up strength or expected too! |

I'm just south of Jacksonville, my side of the state. Yeah, we have the TS warning here. Right now (as of a few minutes ago), its expected to head off-shore near Daytona, possibly pick up speed, then turn back to land and hit at Jax before heading toward Mobile. Duvall county actually closed schools today - seriously no idea why since we only have rain so far.

Blech! I hate these storms. I've only been here (in Florida) for 4 years now and they still scare me. Stupid thing in on my head! And they last for days! OMG, and the kids are home too! lol
I'll never get any work done tomorrow! lol
Maybe I'll get used to them one day... or float away

I feel your pain Cindi... literally. I've been in Orlando since Monday evening. Luckily for business, not fun, but boy, this weather is depressing. This thing just won't move, the "eye" seems stalled near Daytona and has been since late yesterday. |

This is a pain. It's like an annoying visitor that won't go home. Trying to decide right now whether to go in to work or work from home. |

Stay home, Sam. Everyone else is. (Besides, crossing some of the bridges is bound to be icky).
The wind is ferocious this morning here. Even the dogs are unsettled.

Here in WNC, we are just hoping for a northward trek that brings us some of the rain (preferably not as much as Francis and Ivan 4 years ago). Droughts are no fun at all. |

Ok - feeling dumb. I went in. Easy commute, almost nobody on the road. Two hands on the wheel due to gusts, but not that bad. Boot up, pull up email, find out we are closed (no wonder nobody else is in their office).
Next time, check the blackberry BEFORE leaving home.

I am about 150 miles south west of where you are Cindi, and we are still getting heavy showers a couple of times a day. Here are some pics from behind the place that I am working now. I hope to get some shots from the air in a day or two.
This is a small field where we grow experimental crops once in a while. This is looking north, and you can see the storm clouds.
The cow pasture south of the place where I work.
The whole area is under water already, and even some of the main highways are closed north of here because water is over them. Both of these places are usually dry this time of year.
At home it isn't bad. Our power was off for a while but is ok now. A limb landed on my old Ford Bronco and made a small dent in it but that is all the damage at my place.
I can understand how bad it must be with the thing hanging just outside the coast where you are, and dumping rain on you for so long. It was only here for a day and a half and we are much farther inland. I hope that your power stays on line.

I know we aren't experiencing the worst of the storm here in DeLand but we have had an impressive amount of rain in the past 12 hours. Below is a small lake near our house, the water has risen maybe 1' in the past 12 hours, up 2' or so from the beginning of the week. Thankfully we are not down in Brevard County where things are much worse.

We can all be thankful that this isn't a full grown hurricane like Charley, Wilma, or Andrew.

Very true, the worst part about this storm is that if we do lose power I have a 13 Kw generator sitting in my garage waiting on approval for the HOA to have installed.

Well that is VERY true.
But you realize when the storm finally passes we will have another nasty thing to deal with.
Mosquitos.
Blast it - was outside for 20 minutes and got a dozen bites...and some were through clothes! A neighbor said that they never go for him - but they were today. They were vicious. |

Heh, to each their own I guess. Yesterday I went out in the pouring rain to take pictures, soaked to the bone and walking in foot high waters. It was great fun and I'd do it again. Just need a way to keep my lens dry, had to have mum on standby with a microfiber cloth to keep drying it off between shots. But yeah, I live for this stuff, regular photography is not involved enough. I'm just glad we didn't lose power for days to weeks this time, that is never fun. |

I am happy that I live where we can just lock the main breaker off, and plug a gen set into the welding receptacle. We ran for a week after Wilma with an old 6Kw Onan diesel generator. It's noisy, but it is a very happy sound when you can take a hot shower and have the freezer, and washer/drier and a/c and DPC working.
We use a gas drier and range, so we had everything in the place working with only 6 Kw. I have a gasoline Onan 5 Kw too, but it burns 2.5 quarts per hour, even without a load. The diesel used 14 gallons in 70 hours or less than 1 quart of fuel per hour.

Aweee Sam, sorry about the extra commute. But since the roads weren't too bad, you can come to GCS and hang out with me! :D
Waddy, you can come too! lol
I'm going to catch some pictures later today, I'm waiting for my oldest daughter to come over now, she didn't want to stay in her apartment alone today. We'll wait for a lul in the storm and go poke around the neighborhood a bit.
On a side note - I think my poor, already aging and weak gazebo will see its last day today. Its rocking hard with the gusts and leaning about 2 feet. Sad. I love it, its bamboo with a canvas top; the top already has a few new tears since last night. :/

I hope everyone stays safe during the storm. If I were anywhere near you I'd come help clean up the mess, lord knows I'm starting to become a pro at cleaning up after weather related disasters! :)
Be careful and take care!!!!! |

I'm in Orlando, and so far we've just had a crap ton of rain and some gusting winds. I have to drive around town for my job, and they actually closed the orlando offices today. I had my shoes on and was heading out the door when I realized someone had left a vm while I was in the shower.
It could be worse of course, but i'm definitely over the rain. At least I have some time today to work on B&W abstract! ;-) |
