Ugly story, but at least -- in this incident -- it ended well.

Really? The officer in question still has a job. Do you think his attitude has really changed? If he would do that once, in my opinion it's a way of life for him.
I think a years worth of paperwork duty somewhere would be a much more appropriate punishment. I'd prefer to see the officer, not be an officer anymore.

I don't think he should be fired, we all make mistakes, unless he has a record of this type of behavior. However he should be reprimanded for his actions. He is there to protect the citizens not to provoke, anger, and jail an person that (appears) did not do anything wrong. He should also have to pay restitution to this man for the time he was wrongfully jailed.
