Here's a difficult question about the effects of the different metering modes (evaluative, center weighted, average & spot) on the 40D:
Does anyone know of a suitable mode to use for ETTL flash metering when you're in the habit of re-composing shots after obtaining focus lock? My understanding is that if you're in the evaluative mode, the camera will weight exposure calculation toward the zones where you obtained exposure lock (for both ambient and ETTL flash). So... Ambient metering will be fine (locked with exposure), but if you re-compose, then ETTL will be out of whack...
But what happens with the other modes. Average metering will just be average, obviously, but what about center weighted or spot metering? Do you know if the ETTL flash metering is calculated on the same zone/s as the spot or center weighted metering of the ambient light?
Thanks. |

This here should be an interesting read for you. Read it all or focus on the metering chapters. |

Cool. So basically, ETTL flash exposure metering is evaluative, and ETTL II is better at doing that, and some bodies (like the 40D) allow the user to select average flash metering instead of evaluative.
I guess also if things get unreliable, you can just crack out the flash exposure lock button...
Thanks for the input. |
