Whuh?? Do you mean kb and MB?

No I think he means kb and kB

kb = //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilobit
kB = //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilobyte

EDIT**

To show the difference I think this tool may help
//www.unitconversion.org/data-storage/kilobits-to-kilobytes-conversion.html

Thanks Mark. I see. As noted in the Wikipedia, kilobits refers to transmission speeds typically. Not file sizes.

so... how long does it take for a 10MB file to download through a 10Mb/sec connection?

so... we just subtract 10MB by 1024, no?
i'm gonna file a lawsuit against my ISP now... T_T

It's been a long time since I dealt with this in any detail but as I recall there is relevance to filesize too basically I remember 8 bits = 1 byte so a kilobit and kilobyte are quite different.

But mostly it is the misuse of kb, kB or KB that causes problems when discussing filesizes (or rather the fact a lot of people do not realise there is a difference - the same can be said for mb and MB).

200 mile drive now so will have to bail out of this for a few hours :)

There are a lot of variables that affect it, such as network overhead and other traffic, but since there are 8 bits in a byte, I'd say roughly 10-15 seconds.

Sorry, didn't mean to throw anyone off by that comment earlier. It's just that I work in telecommunications and I'm a real stickler when it comes to transmission rates/file sizes. Shutter-for-Hire kept referring to "kb" and I just wanted to point out the difference.

So, lets get this straight...'the max file size entry for basic editing is 150___' is it kB or kb? (the rules say KB

Let me know the proper way, just so I know for reference,

Thanks =)

Uppercase "B," as in Byte.

So... TB = ?

KB, is KiloBytes used to measure size, MegaBytes when you get to bigger sizes. Challenge entries are limited to 150 or 200 KiloBytes
Kb is Kilobits, used to measure transmission speeds, Megabits when you get to broadband and network speed rates.

One thing that irritated the snot out of me is when I was studying for my network+ exam and a training tape I was using (from "Exam Cram", usually a good source of such material) kept referring to network speed in Megabytes per second instead of Megabits per second.

There are 8 bits in a byte, and the maximum decimal amount you can represent with 8 ones or zeros is 255 (256 values, but zero counts as a number, so it only goes to 255) This is why everything in computers seems to be measured in odd numbers, because of the way binary values convert to decimal. 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024...

Ooooh computer math lessons during mathematics week.

I didn't read all the thread.. but I don't vote on images that I think are suspect.. or any images that would sway my vote for some reason or another..

Example image that kinda bothered me recently.. was a self potrait of someone very recognizable. (I didn't vote on it) I would of voted the image down because this person knows most of dpc knows who they are, and I feel like they were taking advantage of that. And it worked too.. I saw many comments from the voters saying "hey so and so.. great image, 10 for you" When.. in my opinion, it was a mediocre image that got voted high just because of the fame of the person in it.

Anyhow..that's my rant on voting.

Wow, I've never considered myself a math nerd. I'm proud of myself over that.

But sometimes you can also identify someone by their style, or chosen subject, and many entries in the occupation challenge could be identified if you were familiar with the person, even if they were not self portraits. I agree though, if you feel their lack of anonimity wouls sway our vote, best to skip that one.

*rolls eyes*

NO ONE uses "bits" to mean file size, yet you managed to derail half the thread with this.

Whatever. Kindly refer to 08/18/2008 08:41:13 PM and see if I derailed this thread from "legal or not? how do we vote???" At least attribute the proper post(s) based on your assumption. I'll refrain from now on from posting *facts*.

Sorry for playing in YOUR sandbox.

Sheesh, relax. In your post, you distinguished between kb and kB, as if it was relevant to the questions the op was asking. And then the next long batch of posts was spent addressing that picky point instead of his questions.

But obviously everyone else participated in the side discussion, too.

So again, relax.

That's just because some of us are a bit anal.

Dictionary.com says

a·nal
–adjective
1. of, pertaining to, involving, or near the anus.
2. Psychoanalysis. a. of or pertaining to the second stage of psychosexual development, during which gratification is derived from the retention or expulsion of feces.
b. of or pertaining to an anal character.
c. of or pertaining to gratification derived from stimulation of the anus.

So which one are you referring to when you mean "anal" ?

ok... now, back to the reason I started this post....

The results are in... here is my woody entry I was talking about...

i did pretty good... but could have been better

this is one that I though people would have pinned as a Fake shot (illegal)

Everyone I showed it too thought I photoshopped the image into the glasses and they didn't believe that it was a real reflection...

It took quite some time to get the reflection just right from the little room setup infront of me...
i'd hate to think that the lower votes were from people who thought i photoshopped the reflection in...

what does everyone think?

thanks
