I would have to get lucky for one to come close to me.
Would you go knock on some random person's door and ask them if you can take pictures of their horse? I don't have the confidence to do that. |
Tell them you are working on a personal Art project, you noticed they have some beautiful horses out in the field, and you wondered if you could take a few photos to see if they meet your needs. Offer a print in exchange, most horse owners are also Horse lovers and would love to have a print(large) of their favorite horse in the house. Maybe even offer to take a photo of them and their horse near sunset if they have a scenic view of the sunset, or do one of them riding in the field, caring for them in the barn.................you get the idea.

Hey this looks like a good place to solicit subscriptions...
Probably some helpful articles in there for this challenge. |

Oooh, not just pets but only horses? Yummy. Too bad about not being able to use one of the 2400 shots I took of horses in the last week! Oh hey Ken, my favorite "cover" ever. |

Ideas for non-horse folk:
Look up birthday party folks in the yellow pages or equivalent, people put on "pony parties" for kids.
Przwalski (sp) horses in zoos
Polo matches if you're on the coasts
Local rodeos
4H (little kids on horses are always fun)
Barrel racers (kids and adults going fast on horses, watch the messy backgrounds though)
Liberty/pasture shots. Horses like to approach the camera when loose, so you might need a helper. Putting some pebbles in a water bottle and shaking it can get some good expressions and/or movement, or crackling it slightly. |

It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask, but I would caution against going inside the fence with the horses, unless you are with someone who is responsible for them and knows them well. Horses can be unpredictable -- they can bite and kick. I doubt your local farmers are going to let you in with their animals, that's just a lawsuit waiting to happen.
You can often get horses to approach a fence by offering them some grass, but again be careful. The fence may be electric, and don't give them anything strange to eat. Strange food can cause serious damage to horses. |
Just to add to this already very good caution...horses don't watch Disney movies, they don't know they're supposed to be big whinnying and nickering marshmallows.
If you do get permission to go in with the beasties (yes, lose your shyness, go up to the house and ask permission; offer to give them a print of the best pictures) DO NOT CARRY TREATS. I can pretty much guarantee that you will get mobbed by horses competing to get at those yummy treats, and the boss horses will happily pound the snot out of any subordinate horses that beat them to you - and they don't care that you're in the line of fire. Especially if you are just some random human and not one that they recognize as dominant over them. They can also tear your pockets right off your clothing.
And go in accompanied only by the owner or someone that the horses know and respect - if it's a large facility there should be a barn manager around. Finally don't lug around too much equipment, some horses have a fine sense of humour and may steal your camera bag, or playfully paw at a spare lens. |

So last week I was driving around the country here in Eugene getting to know the lay of the land. I drove past a spot and literally thought to myself, "I'll have to remember this if there is ever a 'horses' challenge". Now I have to remember where it was... |

I saw one of these in the art store and it was pretty cool. Too pricey for my current toy budget, though.

And hey Canada got silver in showjumping at the Olympics...and one of the riders, Jill Henselwood, lives a 10-min drive from my house! And 'Captain Canada', aka Ian Millar, lives about 45 mim drive away in Perth.
