I was in Peru from August 1st through the 11th last week. It was an amazing, humbling experience. I went with a group called Tropical Pathology and Infectious Disease Association. There was 16 students that went in various levels of schooling. We got college credit for the class, but while we were there we learned all about different diseases there in Peru, Yellow fever, Malaria, TB, Dengue Fever, Worms, and several others that are endemic to the area. We shadowed doctors and rounded on patients during that day, at night we sat in class and had lecture and learned about the diseases. The highlight for me of the trip was the clinics we ran at the small village. The Doctors we were with threw us in the fire. We were split up in groups and given patients. Then we had to ask questions, diagnose the patients, and get them the medication they needed. It was awesome to be as doctors and see the looks in their eyes as we gave them medicine to help heal them. Any time we had questions the docs were in the other rooms with patients as well and would help us as needed.
It was a humbling experience to see the living conditions of everyone there, but to still see how hard they worked and how happy everyone is. I loved Peru. Here is the link to my portfolio on here- //www.dpchallenge.com/portfolio.php?USER_ID=51167&collection_id=30416
and a couple of the pictures and then more in the folder. Just wanted to share a part of my experience.
