Simplicity is the key here at DPC. If the background or objects don't aid in 'telling the story' forthe shot, avoid using them.  JH provides a great example of simplicity in background, lighting, and subject.

I highly recommend two articles written by  drachoo:

They're not always valid, but they're a very good starting place.
For example, I can think of several things you could do to shoot your subject more appealingly: against a colored background, very closeup using DOF to keep the viewer's attention on the holes, interesting lighting that highlights one side and fades on the other, getting it out of dead center, showing something plugged into it (for example, having it in focus in the foreground and in the background show someone playing the game plugged into it).
Just keep trying different ideas and techniques!
