I already learned loads from a challenge entry.
I didn't have a clue about white balance until I submitted an entry.
Thanks to all who vote and comment.

lots about the little details....and low scores are great for telling me what others didn't like

What DarkRider said.

I've probably learned more from leaving comments. By forcing myself to determine why I do or don't like someone else's entry, I have been able to apply that to my own photography. I'm not sure that it's showing in my scores yet, but I think my non-challenge stuff is improving because I can recognize an interesting scene when I see it. At some point it will all start coming together, one little trick at a time.

In terms of editing, what DarkRider said - I've learned to watch the little details.

In terms of shooting, I've learned a huge amount from leaving comments, as yospiff said. Having to think about what I like and don't like about others' images helps me find the ones I like when I'm behind the camera.

Comments have shown me that many people do not look at photographs.
They look at the subjects of photographs instead.

That there are people who cannot see a picture for some idea of one they have acquired as if it were a brand of toothpaste or a hubcap.
That there are people who take offense at being at exposed to emotion, as opposed to a sentiment.
That there are as many opinions as postcards, covering similar genres and subjects, at comparable cost and value.

I've found commenting more profitable in this context, as it would afford one
to examine selected photographs, as if these, themselves, were objects.
I've found discovering and considering the intrinsic facts of unique pictures immensely more satisfying than
hunting down images matching an already populated aesthetic.

Commenting, however, has also shown me that even when effort and care are taken
to nearly match one's appreciation, all can be wasted on some.
It is best therefore to write for those who have an interest and not

worry about the dross.

DarkRider, yospiff and zeuszen have pretty much got it all in the bag. I do feel now that leaving comments helps me more than getting them, whereas when I began here the reverse was true.

I definitely agree that too many people vote strictly on the subject, not taking the whole shot into account. I hate spiders, but if I see a well-taken shot of a spider, I'll give it a suitable score.

Though it can be annoying to read comments showing that people have missed the point of your shot in that the emotion you're trying to convey doesn't register with them. Having said that, they are often the ones playing devils advocate by pointing out the technical flaws in your shot.

Just my .02 CDN...

It's going to take me a while to digest all of what Zeuszen said. I do know he looks for greater depth in the images and prefers originality to the duplication of winning efforts. Though he gives out a lot of low votes, it is with much greater consideration that he gives the votes he does. Now I need to look back and see if I have received the honor of any comments from him.

I'll reiterate something I have said previously in that regard. I believe some vote on a scale of don't like <--->like, while others such as myself and Snaffles, tend to vote on a scale of bad<--->good. I'm not fond of the macabre look of a lot of BiteMe's stuff, but I can appreciate it is good photography and she is very talented.
