I scanned a photo of my brother from a photo given to me tonight. It's not the best shot of Frank, but his buddies want to use it for a memorial plaque at the snowmobile club he helped with - trail grooming, building bridges, sled maintenance, saftey courses...etc. He past away this past Spring.

I scanned it in tif format - if anyone wants to take a look and offer suggestions, I uploaded a jpg to my workshop:

very much appreciated - Deb
Oh, I have CS3

Great idea for the plaque.

Try blurring the background (using lens blur) and toning down the white shirt. Maybe even crop the guys peering in at the left of the image.

Try a search in the forums for idnic's tutorial on manipulating the light, to tone down the white of the shirt a bit. On an ironic note, right across the road from me is the local snowmobile clubhouse! *cue Twilight Zone theme music*

Yes, the guys want to isolate Frank so a crop is needed. I guess my question is, How do I keep the best possible quality for the plaque. From what the fellas tell me, they will print a photo to add to the plaque

Hmm...I'm a bit out of my depth as I've not done anything much with scanned photos...will give you a morning or early afternoon bump...maybe try pm'ing scalvert. Shannon is a professional graphic designer, I think he could be of tremendous use to you, god knows he's always answered every Mac/PS question I've ever thrown his way...good luck!

Yes, Ken - that's what I had in mind - but can't something be done about the noise? I read about noise ninja ...while I don't have that - I scoop it up for this If I knew it would help

Is the TIF higher res than the jpg? Noise reduction won't be so great at this low resolution. Can you scan it again if necessary to get at least a 2400px wide version or even slightly large and email the TIF to me? (email addy on my profile) - I'd be happy to do it if you want...

Well, that's actually no bigger than the jpg version (<1200px), it just has a vast amount of whitespace. Can you rescan at higher res - increase (double or more) DPI and then crop the TIF before resending?

Now I find out a high-res is available.... *sniff*

Yeah, Brad's like some Photoshop Superhero with supersonic hearing who can detect a cry for help from anywhere in the forums.

I'm heading out for a bit, so I am happy to defer to the superhero if you send it to Brad, he'll do a much better job than me. But send it to me anyway just in case he screws it up though. ;-) I'll check back later tonight...

PM sent.
My email can handle 20MB. If 20MB up to 100MB, the file can be transfered through YouSendit.com
Let me know - the bigger the better.

Hey Art - I use chains on my PC to hold it down when it gets unruly.
Last time I have to sit on mine was when I was crunching a 1.7Gb file. I won.
